As an adult, would you get braces? I'Ve been advised against invisalign by my dentist, so braces are my only option.

That depends on how badly misaligned my teeth were, I guess. I had braces as a teenager and can answer any questions you may have, if that helps?

Why have you been advised against invisalign? My mom is just finishing up hers, and has been really happy with the result. I had the traditional, old-school metal braces in middle school (20 years ago) and it was awful. Excruciating pain and constant headaches. Would absolutely not recommend unless your teeth are really messed up to the point that it's like interfering with your life/eating or something. (I found out years later that in my case it wasn't even necessary, the dentist/orthodontist were just sleazy and wanted to make money off me, and my mom didn't know any better. Although maybe if you actually do need them it wouldn't be so painful, IDK.)

Yeah, the fact that you were in constant pain is definitely linked to the fact that the braces were unnecessary, and probably to incompetence as well as assholery on the part of the dentist. Braces usually hurt some when they're first put in and immediately after adjustment, but if it's extremely painful or your mouth is tender for more than a couple days, something's wrong and should be fixed immediately.

I need them again! If I could afford them, I would.

My mother had braces in her late 60s (after already having had them as a teen) and she seemed fine about them. Has your dentist suggested you need braces for a particular proble, or do you want straighter teeth? If the latter, I guess you have to decide how much you want that. I hated having braces as a teen, but I think I'd be more sanguine about it and do a much better job of caring for my teeth if I had braces now.

Nah, but if I were, this would be the time to do it.

Nah. My teeth are crooked, but they don’t really bother me. Also, I can’t afford it. I have a relative who got braces as an adult. She had them for two years and hated them, but loves her smile now.

Thanks everyone!

Is there a way to point out a logical fallacy in someone's argument without sounding rude?

If it’s actually important to correct, I’d do it in private and phrase it as kindly as possibly. Like hey when you said x, I don’t think that really makes sense because y. Otherwise, I’d just keep my mouth shut if it involves work or an acquaintance. All bets are off for friends and other anons, though.

It is pretty easy when you talk IRL as you can project 'friendly' non verbaly.
Most people don't care about logic, js.
