I have been 'fandom attacked' on tumblr way more than I ever have been on Twitter.

Here's just one example (even though you didn't ask lol): One time I made a post asking who had what merchandise from within the fandom and I got 10 anons telling me to [various harmful things] because I wasn't thinking of people who couldn't afford stuff and they count as fans too. And also the reblogs with nasty comments.

Everyone's experiences are different, though, I know.

Ugh, those people suck.

I didn't know fandom existed on Twitter. I'm just there for politics.

Same same same. I can't even really picture fandom on Twitter.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-12 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that always seemed super weird to me, too. For the past two months, though, I have been spending time in Twitter fandom. I just followed a link to a nice image, and discovered a whole new fandom culture. Which was actually pretty interesting! By now I get why and how people do fandom on Twitter, and I'm even actively taking part sometimes.

Cool!

Most of Tumblr's communities, fandom and otherwise, tried migrating to other sites when porn got banned. To varying degrees of success.

I've seen it said that Tumblr banning porn is the worst thing to happen to Twitter.

HA. Twitter is a bit of a cess-pit in a lot of ways, so I'm not sure if it's the *worst*....

I haven't been to the New Tumblr at all, is anyone over there?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-13 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
There's definitely people still there. I don't know that much about it because I remade a while ago and try to keep my dash activity down these days.

I actually moved my Tumblr over there when it first started, but - as with Tumblr - the whole site is slow (for me) and tends to make my computer unhappy and slow, so I gave up on it. I haven't been to Tumblr in months and months.

I don't think it differs that much from any other social media platform. In my experience, most of them require you to be pretty assertive about controlling your experience if you want to get the most out of them and not get bogged down in ridiculousness.

I think with Twitter, it's particularly important to stay out of arguments because shit blows up so fast sometimes - I saw a tweet the other day saying that Twitter is essentially the Internet's limbic system and I think there's some truth to that, things can develop so quickly and there's so much immediate emotion involved. It's a bad idea to get involved in an argument on Twitter unless you already have a good handle on the kind of argument that does happen on Twitter.

But other than that, just follow people who engage with stuff in good faith, mute or block people who don't. Block words associated with discourse that you don't like seeing. Use lists to engage with things without keeping them on your main timeline.

Wasn't there a large migration of fandom from Tumblr to Twitter a while ago?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-11 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Allegedly. I haven't seen much direct evidence of it personally.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-11 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Mostly with fanartists, I believe.

One very important friend I'd made via tumblr moved entirely to twitter after Tumblr's Porn Ban.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-11 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
For my main fandom, it isn't so much that Tumblr is nicer, it's that the vast majority of people have migrated to Twitter. Tumblr is sometimes days behind the Twitter discourse and never gets as vitriolic anymore.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-11 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I've found that the best way to use twitter for me is by staying the fuck away from it lol. Tumblr has been a much better fandom experience in my case and I never had the need to jump to the other platform.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-11 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not just on Twitter. It's on Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram, fan forums, everywhere! Try to ignore it if you can.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-12 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Twitter was pretty boring and left because I couldn't find anything fun there.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-12 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly I remember being on Twitter for my fandoms back in 2007(?) as I wasn't... Good at getting along with people on LJ lol, then I migrated to Tumblr like everyone else (which was a better experience, if slightly self-destructive) and then I had a weblog as I soon realized fandoms were more enjoyable alone. Of ALL places/communities, I have yet to find one more hostile than LJ. Yeah Tumblr got pretty nasty when some folks migrated, yeah Twitter can get pretty clique-y and hostile depending on your fandoms, yeah blogging is "big responsibility" and you have to be careful but ugh, for me personally even 4chan was less hostile than LJ as it had clear "rules" at least. To me LJ has always been online Mean Girls - mark people's usernames, worship them or cancel them, stick to discourse or gtfo.
And yet some people miss it to this day, so... To each their own, yes.

At the this point I cannot understand why anyone wants to use social media at all.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-12 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Because the way the internet works, everything worth finding is on the few giant social media hubs now.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-12 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
I created my Twitter account back in 2008 and basically never really used it. This year I got into cdramas and looked for pics of my favourite actor. Which landed me on Twitter. And suddenly, barely two months later, I'm following fandom accounts over there, and post tweets and comments myself. It's been fun so far, and kinda eye-opening. And yeah, the mute function is my new best friend for topics that I don't want to see.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-12 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
My fandom is a niche jrpg and the twitter/tumblr fandom is the same, and they're both overrun by the same toxic group on both. It's really "good fun", seriously.
