Re: 148
(Anonymous) 2008-12-10 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)Final Fantasy is a game. The story is just part of the world for the player to interact with, it's not a sacred canon of masterful storytelling.
Re: 148
Okay then.
Games like Final Fantasy, Bioshock and Knights of the Old Republic, to name some just off-the-cuff, have been revered and considered great games not just for their gameplay, but for their story and atmosphere. Similarly, games like Portal, Little Big Planet and Starcraft all offer more than just gameplay.
It's just so naive of you to think that all there is to a game is its gameplay. Obviously that's important, but it just doesn't make sense. If that were true, it would be the only way anyone ever evaluated games. People play games for a whole host of reasons and make games to be strong on all kinds of different points. Games are a medium, you can do all kinds of things with them, and storytelling is one of them. Why would you even bother to fight that? Why do you have a problem with people appreciating the story, the atmosphere, the graphics, the characters, the design of a game?
I mean, maybe I just live in some crazy world where people play games to have fun and there are many different ways of having fun, but I'm pretty sure you're just being narrow-minded because you're sick of fangirling.
Re: 148
(Anonymous) 2008-12-10 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)And what I want is for the game to use gameplay to tell it's story. To argue about badly directed cinema knock-offs like the ones in Final Fatnasy or Kingdom Hearts is stupid because the game is fun IN SPITE OF THEM rather than THANKS TO THEM.
Re: 148
It's nice that these aren't the things that you want, primarily, out of a game.
That doesn't mean it's what everybody wants.
Is it really so hard for you to accept that people play games for different reasons? Hell, I know people who have gone through games with gameplay they hated because they were fascinated by the story.

Completely unrelated, but your icon amuses the hell out of me
(Then again, maybe this should be taken with a grain of salt, as I worship at the altar of Xenosaga. All hail the hour-long cutscene.)
Re: Completely unrelated, but your icon amuses the hell out of me
And I'm not going to lie, I personally think KH and KH2 fall squarely into this category.

You mean like MGS4? :D
I'm pretty sure most people would say they wished there was more actual gameplay in the game, but I think MGS4 is a case where it was appropriate to put the story first. The Microwave Corrider was one of the most intense gameplay experiences I've had in a while, and that involved only a single button. It'd be impossible to duplicate that experience in a movie, or in a game that put little emphasis on story.
(Don't mean to butt in, just want to say I agree~)

(Anonymous) 2008-12-11 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)It's my belief that anyone who thinks story has no place in games should be made to play the microwave corridor.
I'm not one of those KOJIMA IS A PERFECT WRITER HIS ENDLESS CUTSCENES ARE JUST LIKE MOVIES OMGAWD people but I do think that one thing he is very, very, very good at is giving you the illusion of interactivity and then snatching it away at precision moments. He's done it inspiringly to show that your character is being separated from you and your homicidal videogame dickishness ("It's no good! I can't do it!") and horribly so that you feel the pain your character is feeling ("You're a wonderful man. Kill me.") and in every case it works.
tl;dr I think people need to stop thinking of games as 'does this game have too much story and not enough gameplay?' and start thinking about 'does this game use its gaminess to make the story/atmosphere/emotions work better?' That's why MGS induces so many strong emotions in gamers - not because CUTSCENES or NANOMACHINES but because it's so good at being a game even when all it asks from you is to press the Triangle button to stop Solid Snake going limp while he crawls slowly down the small hot tunnel.
