I stay out of the debates. Personally I'm happy with the canon ships, though I prefer the idea of Aang and Katara breaking up for a while and then getting back together when they are older and have more time to develop a romantic relationship.

But I used to take shipping so seriously, and I look back on that time in my life and shake my head. It is all subjective and personal opinion. Ship what you want. Like what you like. Let others like what they like. It isn't hurting you for them to ship something you don't like.

People can say whatever they want about current fandom, but the heterosexual ships ship wars were the worst

(Anonymous) 2020-07-30 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about that. I remember when I was about 14 and in the Naruto fandom, I was bewildered that people would fight over Sasuke/Naruto vs. Naruto/Sasuke. That was basically the same ship! It made no sense to me and, even then, I had clear preferences over top/bottom stuff.

honestly i'm looking forward to the resurgence of shipping wank for this canon when the live-action show comes out bc i cannot wait to see how everyone sj-flairs their petty ship-hate arguments to make their opinion seem more legit than the subjective gripe it is.

i never had a horse in the race for this show romance-wise so i can just sit back and watch the crazy while laughing.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-30 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh this happened plenty during the show's initial run, don't worry. Lots of "Kataang is literal pedophilia you monster" and "Zutara is literal abuse you monster".

I just... don't understand how it matter so much to people. It's not real. It's not representation. It has literally nothing to do with you. It's just shipping.

Whenever the stans of a losing ship bash the canon ship, I'm over here going "Sure, you think your ship would have worked out as perfectly as you wanted and been better if hang this one because you have no canon to prove you wrong." Nothing would have stopped a canon Zutara from destroying everything that fan claims Kara stands for. It just didn't happen because the ship didn't.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-30 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Katara, not Kara, autocorrect.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-30 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
if this isn't the truth lmao.

like i've got plenty of non-canon ships myself but i've never seen the point in trying to tear down the canon one, it's not like it'd make my own ship better somehow since it's just some random preference. i'd like to think my fanon ships would work out, but there's no actual canon proof that this would have been the case so i have no high horse to sit on, because the lack of any evidence one way or another isn't the foolproof argument a lot of shippers seem to think it is.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-31 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. The vast majority of canon ships I've had were handled horribly by canon once they got together. I can think of a couple where I actually liked them in the RST stage, but most of the time, hell no.

NGL, I still yearn for my noncanon ships to be canon. But I'm realistic about the fact that if they were to become canon, they'd probably be a huge let-down (partially because writers tend to write romance badly, but also because my expectations are just way too high).

(Anonymous) 2020-07-31 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Mmhm. "Be careful what you wish for...", and all that. I mean, yeah, if a non-canon ship I liked did become canon, it'd be cool...but I also can easily see where the show could mess it up, too.

Plus, I'm also the sort who often tends to like both the canon and non-canon ships, so I figure I'm good either way, personally.

Have you missed Twitter since AtLA was added to Netflix, or is this an old secret?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-30 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not an Avatar fan - I couldn't even bring myself to finish the first season -, so I'm not emotionally involved or whatever but I do remember strongly disliking Aang and thinking he was the worst part.

I also remember thinking that he was way younger than Katara and they had no chemistry whatsoever; if anything they reminded me of siblings.

I don't remember being overly impressed by Zuko who, I thought, was a bit of a cliché, but I thought that he would at least be more interesting to ship with Katara than Aang.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-30 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
SA

And that should be "emotionally invested", not "involved". Can't type tonight, sorry.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-30 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Same, same. Everybody I know loves the show but I couldn't get past even the first three or four episodes on account of Aang being so annoying.

Zuko was very cliche in the first season. They get more into his character and why he is the way he is later on and he kind of grows as a person through fits and starts (they all do) but yeah, early on it's kind of hard to care for him much.

It kind of reminds me of Clone Wars in some ways. The beginning was a little rough and had a very childish bent but as time went on and the original audience also was aging along with it you start to see more serious themes really get woven in. It's still a show for kids (though in Clone Wars' case there were several times I was like, "wait....this is heavy for a kid show...") since that's still the primary audience but it's just...grown up a bit and doesn't really sugarcoat that Bad Things are happening nor does it keep with the whole This Group is All Bad Guys and This Group is All Good Guys. You learn there's a whole range of personalities and some of the "bad guy" group actually are okay/good they just have different aims and goals but don't actually want to like...destroy the world...and some of the "good guy" group are really not that good and are only out for themselves and don't care if the world burns as long as they get what they want.

i was also kind of looking forward to the resurgence of wank, but everyone went off and started shipping zuko/sokka so it hasn't popped up much.

Katara is the most judgemental purposefully ignorant, self-righteous, and selfish character in the show. So yeah, the meaning of a name means nothing here. The only reason she ends up with Aang is because he idolizes her and she can control him.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-31 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
tbh I know this is an unpopular opinion but it's one I came away from the show with too. I loved a lot about it.

But I hated Katara.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-31 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I love Katara and I like Katara/Aang but I still agree with this, lol. She's imperfect in a lot of ways but manages the least growth despite having some of the darkest storylines (revenge and bloodbending, etc).

I really don't think she can control him at all. Like, there's a part of Katara's mothering personality that has passive-aggression down and is manipulative in that way, but what I liked about the show was that it never really worked for her.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-31 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you so much about Katara, I'm surprised to see that opinion written by someone who isn't me.

I don't think she ended up with Aang for selfish reasons though. The show wouldn't do that. She is just a character at the end of the day, and we can assume that however awful she was to watch, she wasn't evil and wouldn't marry someone for a reason like that.

I'll say that I actually understand why Zutara shippers ship it. There are some tropey elements to both ships, but the writers handled the Zutara tropes in such a more compelling and less awkward way than the Kataang tropes. But I think there's a better foundation for Kataang, and there's some philosophical things about the way Katara is written that makes Aang narratively better. I get both honestly. Also I ship the three of them together, and I find Zuko and Aang's relationship the stronger of the three pairs both chemistry wish and narratively.

As a side note, I really really love than even with Aang's major crush, Katara crushed on literally every hot guy she could, good for her.

I figured that ATLA would revive the Zutara vs Kataang wars. Except now I'm running into Zukka everywhere.

It was amusing but so much of it is so OOC that I've started to blacklist and get annoyed. Whatever makes people happy I guess.

Honestly in AtLA I ship everyone with everyone else. /shrug
