How Early Do You Start Celebrating Halloween?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-30 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's still July but I'm already gearing up for Halloween with related recipes and festive autumn-colored decorations.

When I'm living in a northern state, I definitely start at least with autumn stuff by August. But here in Texas it is hard to get in the autumn spirit when it is still in the 90s and 100s. And since I'm living with the parents I don't get to decorate myself.

I do listen to both Christmas and Halloween music all year round. I'll add a few extra tracks closer to the time, but my favorites don't get taken off my Ipod.

The last three years I've done a Halloween party for my Toastmasters club. But I've ended up doing 90% of the work and spending and not really had actual fun with it. So even if we're back meeting in person in October, don't think I'll do that this year.

But Halloween is my favorite holiday, autumn is my favorite season, and when I'm living on my own again (someday), I absolutely will get into the spirit early and excitedly. Honestly, my place my just have a general autumn/Halloweeny theme to its normal decoration because that's my favorite aesthetic. That and nerdy fandom posters.

Around where I live, September and October are usually the hottest months of the year (to a grotesque degree in recent years), so it's always a deeply weird vibe leading up to Halloween and it makes it really hard to get into the autumnal mood at all.

Yup. The one of biggest things I miss about Massachusetts is autumn. Just nothing compares, and it makes the cold winters worth it.

ot, but...
Any thoughts on toastmasters, or does it really depend on the group? I need to work on public speaking/social stuff, but the local has hours I'd have to schedule for.

I have an October birthday, so I don't usually decorate or buy candy until after that, but I've definitely put together costumes in January/February in years past. :D

October 1st.

and not to throw shade but I'm gonna throw shade. yall, the corporations have picked up on your thirst. they know now to market to Halloweeners as early as July. they're going to use you to make Halloween Second Christmas. Please don't let them. don't fall for their marketing tactics.

also the current crop of halloween fabric at joann's is ugly and I don't want to see yall with it.

On the one hand, the continued push to have multi-month long Peak Buying Shit periods for every holiday is exhausting.

On the other hand, I sure as fuck appreciate fabric and craft stores specifically putting out their holiday themed stuff three months in advance of the holiday, because between work and other obligations it usually takes me three months (at least) to have anything handcrafted finished.

Normally Oct. 1st. apparently I'm not celebrating it at all this year unless a vaccine gets available REAL fast. Which I'm super depressed about because Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I ALWAYS go to a party or Rocky Horror or something. :(

I don't do anything much for Halloween except dress up, decorate, and hand out candy, but yeah. :-( I was so looking forward to going crazy with the decorations this year because Halloween falls on a Saturday with a full moon, and instead it's gonna be just another day, barring a miracle vaccine.

It's one of my favorite holidays too, and I've decided I'm still going to decorate the shit out of my home and organize a virtual horror movie and Arkham Horror party with my friends. It's not the same as getting together in person, but it's at least something to look forward to.

So usually by spring/summer (sometimes right after Halloween) I have my costume idea.

But usually in October is when I turn the full on party into high gear.
September is to enjoy the Autumn and late summer. Autumn is usually in bloom by October so by my calculations, yes, it would be about time.
