I don't really buy the "but Hetalia teaches history!" argument, or think that those kind of fics can be written in a way that's anything but atrocious.

I do, however, think the character designs are cute. If the whole thing had nothing to do with stereotypes or geography AT ALL and was just about random people acting silly together, I'd like it. :/

I think that everyone who actually seriously thinks that Hetalia teaches history is doing it wrong.

From what I've found, the kink meme is really the only place where I've seen things going into that offensive territory. I think that for the most part the fandom is a lot more based on fanart than it is on fic, so you get a lot more of, "Look at this pretty picture I drew of Northern Italy~" than some of the things that pop up on the kink meme. It's a mostly good-natured fandom, I've found.

For someone who knows jack shit about history, as I did (seriously -- I know the more major stuff, but for the most part I'm lost), skimming through Hetalia has actually taught me little facts and tidbits in a usually sweet, cute, or funny way. Even if they're just TINY factoids like "Germany annexed Austria" and "the Holy Roman Empire =/= the Roman Empire." It can also make people more interested in actually going out and learning more about history, even if they don't learn much at all directly from the series.

Also, a lot of the ways the characters interact are cute or sweet or charming because of the history the countries have with one another. America and England being brothers makes this flashback to the Revolutionary War (http://community.livejournal.com/hetalia/531.html) even more heartrending to me. That said, it's even better when you connect the characters to the countries, but the characters have such specific personalities (even when stereotyped) that it's really easy just to think of them as people, too.

Those fics unsettle me too, though. From what I've seen that's mostly just in parts of the kink meme, and not widespread in the fandom as a whole.

I've written several fics for that kink meme (none of the ones sampled in that secret), all of which involved some amount of research and taught me new tidbits about the nations'/characters' respective histories. No other series has forced me to learn for the sake of writing porn.

Some of the fandom can get quite weird and we definitely cross lines now and again, but some of us also really, really fucking love our history. And we don't bite, I promise.
