For someone who knows jack shit about history, as I did (seriously -- I know the more major stuff, but for the most part I'm lost), skimming through Hetalia has actually taught me little facts and tidbits in a usually sweet, cute, or funny way. Even if they're just TINY factoids like "Germany annexed Austria" and "the Holy Roman Empire =/= the Roman Empire." It can also make people more interested in actually going out and learning more about history, even if they don't learn much at all directly from the series.

Also, a lot of the ways the characters interact are cute or sweet or charming because of the history the countries have with one another. America and England being brothers makes this flashback to the Revolutionary War (http://community.livejournal.com/hetalia/531.html) even more heartrending to me. That said, it's even better when you connect the characters to the countries, but the characters have such specific personalities (even when stereotyped) that it's really easy just to think of them as people, too.

Those fics unsettle me too, though. From what I've seen that's mostly just in parts of the kink meme, and not widespread in the fandom as a whole.
