Speaking personally, I have never doubted your sincerity, I just think your reading of the movie is totally wrongheaded, and reflects a bad understanding of the duty of care that a nurse has for patients under her supervision, and a staggeringly callous disregard for the harm caused to the mental health patients under her care.

And I refuse to care what Ryan Murphy's crazy ass has to say about the topic.

You should bathe more often. Your fingernails are filthy.

"becomes jaded and bitter before turning into a full-fledged monster to her patients"

Yeah, a real hero. Also, she is a white woman. No one will be Walter White-ing her. Sounds like she will be portrayed as even worse because we will see more innocent patients that she hurts.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-09 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That’s not their official synopsis.

But yes, it will be misogyny if people hate on her when they cheered on Walter White or Joaquin’s Joker.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-09 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
da, but like, you seem oddly certain that these will be the same people doing both?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-09 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
If you want to cheer for a villain, go ahead. If you want to misread the series the same way that people misread Breaking Bad, go ahead, no one's going to stop you. But don't tell us your interpretation is right, or that there's some kind of moral requirement for people to be wrong about this series in the same way that they were wrong about Breaking Bad.

(actually, FWIW, I think we probably should have more nuanced conversations about cheering for villains, but that's pretty clearly not what's at issue here)

(Anonymous) 2020-08-10 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. Even if it's the same people doing both, which is not remotely guaranteed, a hell of a lot more people have had to deal with nasty, shitty health care and especially mental health care professionals than have ever dealt with high school teachers turned meth dealers, or with clown-themed serial killers.

The more realistic and personally relatable a villain is, the less people will generally like them.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-10 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
if her actress gives a good performance i'll cheer her on just as much as i did Joaquin’s Joker.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-09 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
There are shows with serial killers as the leads, but whatever you need to do to feel better about yourself, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-09 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
And Dexter is the hero of his series, not the villain.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-10 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
If you think the moral of Dexter is that we should all be more like him, then you very much missed the point of the series. Dexter's the protagonist, not the hero. There actually is a difference.

I think the character assessment of her here (and the author's comments) are interesting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nurse_Ratched

I think even if you're trolling, the point of someone in the position of power she has is to *not* let your personal struggles and/or issues become things you work out on the people who are literally helpless. She crossed a line, unfortunately, and cause a patient to kill himself. In a perfect world, she would realize that, get therapy, and find another job.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-09 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, bless your heart, but I think it's obvious after about a dozen times around this conversation that OP doesn't really care about ethics beyond rationalizing the forms of abuse they approve of.

Every time I see people defend her, it's always "oh she was up against a sexist monster, ~of course~ she did what she did."

Billy was an innocent kid, and she drove him to suicide. People tend to forget him. (I've actually seen someone say she shouldn't be blamed for that because her intent wasn't to hurt Billy. She knew his psychiatric history-- even if it wasn't malicious, she sure as hell was incompetent).

I mean, it's possible that everyone in OFOtCN is an asshole? Not liking Ratched doesn't mean we side with the other assholes. It's not an either/or situation all the time.

You should maybe read the series description.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-09 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ratched is an origins story, beginning in 1947, which will follow Ratched’s (Paulson) journey and evolution from nurse to full-fledged monster. The series will track her murderous progression through the mental health care system."

Not that that means there won't be sympathizing, because people do sometimes sympathize with villains, just that she is pretty obviously a villain in the story. I like Hannibal Lecter as an interesting and compelling character, but if anyone called him a horrible person, I would have to agree.

+1 especially to your last point. It's possible to sympathise with a villain's journey and/or think they're a compelling character and *also* still think they're an awful person and find it weird that people want to re-write them as always in the right.

Sarah Paulson said that she initially hated Ratched but that the series gave her a profound sympathy for her character, and that by the end of the first season people will understand her.

Just like the secret from yesterday, context is everything. The might make her a sympathetic little do-gooder in this show but that doesn't change her intentions and actions in the original movie.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-10 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I am absolutely gobsmacked by your faith that the character in that show will in any way be reconcilable with the one that already exists

It's a Ryan Murphy project ffs

ryan murphy is a misogynist (I do not think he thinks he's being misogynist. he thinks he's elevating complicated female characters), so I don't think you'll be vindicated, especially since even on a good day general audiences have problems sympathizing with female characters all along the moral spectrum.

your defense of her is always wildly authoritarian, and that's why no one sympathizing with you anon. if your defense was more about where she actually fits in the system and how male and female power present themselves, then you might get less troll calls.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-10 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
How is he misogynist?
