Inspired by 3: Do you read your own fanfic?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-17 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
For purposes other than editing it, I mean. Do you get any pleasure from reading your own work, or is it a cringefest all the way?

Uh, well, given how rare my OTPs are and some of my kinks, I do occasionally read my own PWPs for that purpose if I've reread all the other fics and want something else.

I do and it depends. Sometimes I read it and think, “Wow, I can’t believe I wrote something this good”. Most of the time though, I feel kinda embarrassed by it because it’s full of all my favorite cliches.

Sometimes I read the better ones to remind myself of areas I can improve on in future writing projects, a 'see where you went wrong' sorta deal. Other times I read it just to read it but i'm a narcissist like that

This is me, too, pretty much. Though occasionally I'll reread a fic of mine and be like, "Hey, I'm actually pleased with how that turned out!" :D.

yes, occasionally. I'm sure a lot of people will think I'm being egotistical but I think most of what I wrote was good.

No. I don't cringe, I just don't care really

I have a story in my head and I get it out on metaphorical paper and people seem to like it so I post it for them to read

And that's it lol

I once had the very odd experience of reading a fic I found in an ff.net collection, thinking it was clumsy but decent, and then looking at the author name and slowly realising that I WROTE it. 16 years ago, circa 2004, about two pseudonyms back. I had completely forgotten the thing existed. Most of the things from that pseud, actually. It was a good few fandoms ago. That was definitely a slightly surreal experience.

I do occasionally read back over more recent fic, yeah. It's fun. I've had a good few odd ideas over the years.

I love this so much!

Sometimes. Every now and then I'll read over something I wrote and think "wow, that's actually good, I'm proud of it" but that's rare. I usually wouldn't call it a cringefest, though, other than a fic I wrote when I was a teenager that was just awful (and that was the one time I let a specific friend read fic I wrote...I still get embarrassed thinking about it years later). Generally it's more just "meh, this is dumb, I suck".

Re: Inspired by 3: Do you read your own fanfic?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-17 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. All too often, I'm the only one writing for that pairing, or even fandom. If there's more fic available, I'm less likely to re-read my own.

Re: Inspired by 3: Do you read your own fanfic?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-17 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I do and I enjoy it, no cringe at all. but there's only so many times I can re-read it because having made it plus re-reading it already, I know every beat, every turn of phrase. it's no longer new, and then it morphs from not-new into old and tired and I can't read it anymore or I'll start hating myself.

Re: Inspired by 3: Do you read your own fanfic?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-17 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I like to re-read my own fics about once a year or so, mostly to see if I think the writing still holds up, it's more for my own curiosity and amusement than anything else and even if I do end up liking a fic less because of it I don't take it down or change anything, I just keep a mental note of how I'd do things better and apply that to my new fics.

I also have a folder full of smutty one-shots for whatever ship is my current fixation that I re-read when I am in ~that mood.

Yes. I write the plots I want to read.

if i am rereading it soon enough after writing it that i remember wtf i wrote, then i am only bothering to read it so i can edit it. but i'll reread it a handful of times, on different days, in different weather, etc, in order to do so.

but i also have shit memory lmao so sometimes it only needs to be half a year until i completely forget what i wrote. when that's the case i'll reread it and just be thoroughly entertained because surprise ! i know how to hit all my fav shit in junk that i write myself!!!

Honestly, my fanfic tends to be the only fanfic I read these days, awful as that sounds. I just have no interest in reading other people's stuff, because I usually can't find anything worthy of scratching my itches. Obviously, I will occasionally find a fic that's an exception, but this is rare.

For the record, when I say this, I don't believe my writing is better than anyone else's. I'm just saying my itches are different from other people's.

As for how I feel... well, sometimes it's a cringefest, and other times I'm shocked at how well it holds up now. Though during times of cringe, I do get pleasure from laughing at how bad/awkward it was (it's like, c'mon, teen self! You seriously thought this was gold?).

Yeah, I read my own fanfic for my favorite ships, since the fandom(s) for my favorite ships are dead.

I only write fic the way I'd enjoy reading it, so yes I go back and read it sometimes for fun.

I feel uncomfortable about some of the poetry I wrote for a class that my teacher asked to send away to be published. Firstly because it's poetry, secondly because I feel like I just regurgitated a mixture of the required reading for good grades and it wasn't "me", and thirdly I have to remember that lots of people read it and it had my real name attached.

All the time, though not sure how much it counts since I've never posted/finished any of them. Sometimes I'll add a little more when I get to the end, but I have a bad habit of stopping abruptly in the middle of a thought so they usually just sit there since I don't remember exactly where I was going with it.

Re: Inspired by 3: Do you read your own fanfic?

Honestly, fairly often. I wrote it because it was something I wanted to read and no one else had written it, so why wouldn't I read it over and over again, as long as it turned out in a way I was satisfied with.

For a couple of weeks I'll read it over and over again for my own enjoyment. But then it gets old like overplaying a favorite song.

I rarely reread old fic. When I do, I usually get a feeling of either "wow, I was a genius, where did *that* writer go?" or "yikes, WTF was I thinking?"

Sometimes I enjoy it.

Sometimes it's like nails down a chalkboard.

I swing between the two from day to day with no rhyme or season.

Sometimes when I repost old stuff over AO3. I've noticed that I prefer re-reading my drabbles and short stuff, though, and don't care much for the few longer fics.

I write what I want to read and it involves specific details about my own OCs, so I usually end up reading my own fanfic more than I read anything else.

Really really old stuff?
I read it for the laughs, second hand embarrassment, and the occasional "oh that was actually a good bit, good on you, clever anon"

More recent things: only when it's been long enough to forget what I kind of wrote and rediscover some bits I liked

Drawerfic: quite often hehehe
