People shouldn't be able to own property they're not living in. Everyone should be able to afford to own a property to live in, and if they can't they should just be given one because being homeless is not going to motivate anyone to do better in life, it keeps you down.
Landlords are a remnant of class oppression and shouldn't still be a thing.

... you do realize that the vast majority of people who rent out properties are actually solidly middle-class and rely on that rent for income, right? And that actually helps keep rents down, because they can't afford to have the place sitting around empty for long stretches of time, so it's to their advantage to price the rent at a level most people are willing to pay.

I own a house, which I know makes me super lucky, and I kind of agree? I think people who own tons of rental properties but live miles or even states/countries away suck and shouldn't be allowed to.

Someone renting out spare rooms, which I might have to do if I want to keep this place, or someone who owns two neighboring properties and rents one and lives in the other, or lives in half a duplex and rents the other, is different than a distant slum lord.

I'm definitely not a millionaire, but this reminds me of when people talk about the difference between a millionaire and a billionaire. One is just a person who made (or inherited, but) lots of money. The other is a parasite who exploited a bunch of people and probably also legal loopholes to hoard more cash than they could spend in a lifetime.

... why? A lot of people have no interest in owning a house. Houses are a ton of work, they're expensive, and if you own a place it's much more complicated to just up and move than it is if you're renting.

Personally, I don't want a house. I don't want to have to be responsible for mowing the lawn and shoveling snow and raking leaves and cleaning gutters, I don't want to have to clean (or pay someone else to clean) an entire house that I'm only really going to use maybe three or four rooms out of anyway, the heating and cooling bills for a house are a big no thanks, and I much prefer having maintenance on call for whenever something goes wrong. I for one am very glad people own and rent out properties they aren't living in.

NAYRT - I feel the same way about renting. I mean, if I could own property in an area where the property value was going to rise well beyond what I'd have to spend to maintain the place, I guess I'd go for it. But I'm pretty fine with renting.

That said, a lot of your objections seem to be based on the presumption that when OP said "property" they meant "free-standing house." A property can be a condo. No mowing, shoveling, raking, or gutters. It can be a small, well-insulated condo, if too much extra space and high heating bills are not your scene.

That's true, but even so, a lot of people don't want to own a condo either and would rather just rent. There's a lot of responsibility and cost involved in owning any sort of property, house or condo, so I'm kind of rolling my eyes at the idea that property ownership is something that everyone aspires to because plenty of people don't want to have to deal with all of that. There's a reason that a whole lot of older people move out of houses and into apartments and rental condos.

My sister owns a condo, and when her washing machine died, she was the one who had to consult with the repair company, pay to have them come out and look at it to see if it could be repaired, and then do all the research into a new one, buy it, and arrange to have it delivered and installed. When you rent, all of those things are the responsibility of your landlord, not you. My fridge started acting up several months ago and maintenance came and took care of all of that for me. Plus, if I ever decide I want to move, all I have to do is choose not to renew my lease. I don't have to find a real estate agent, pay them money, etc. etc.
