I hated idol dramas (of all flavors, but particularly the come-lately rash of Chinese ones) when I was growing up and everyone in school loved them, and now I feel like I'm being cosmically pranked because they are somehow the fandom flavor of the year. I can't stand how, with very few exceptions, they always seem to go all-in on attractive actors and glossy production values at the expense of writing and acting. If there is the slimmest opportunity to go for cheap drama, these shows will go for it, and yet I have to see people on FS of all places unironically extoll their virtues with praises like "amazing eye-acting" and "like watching the earth fall in love with the sky".

The above is a secret I've abstained from making for almost a year now, but I really don't understand how we got here.

idk how we got here but contemplate previous phases fandom as a whole would go through. first was the full on weeb, where if it wasn't Japanese it was crap. Then Korea. Now China. I don't know what it means or how it happened but there's an eerily weird country/nationality/culture migration in phases.

I do remember waaaaay back in the mid-aughts when the small minority of K-pop fans were bemoaning that everybody was so into J-rock and no one cared about their idols. Flip the switch a few years later and they were drowning in interest. I guess if it means at some point fandom is going to cycle through everything country by country, there's a lot of super obscure content that's going to become the hot new flavor for a little bit eventually? One can hope, at least.

I didn't realize that The Untamed would be considered an idol drama. You have every right to be frustrated, of course. But I remember the secret you're quoting and it seems unkind to denigrate what looked to me like someone's genuine, heartfelt enjoyment of a show.

It's not an idol drama and it actually has fairly solid writing, considering it's based on a novel with a decent plot, even though censorship messed up a lot of the grey/grey morality.

I didn't think it was, based on my limited understanding of what an idol drama is. Some of the cast were formerly in bands, if that's what the anon I was referring to meant. But the "like watching the earth fall in love with the sky" is a direct quote from a recent secret made by someone who enjoyed The Untamed and was surprised by how much it moved them, so I was a little uncertain what the anon was trying to say.

What does the source material have to do with whether or not the adaptation is an idol drama? And the source material is a Chinese web novel with a ridiculous plot plagued with plagiarism controversies and the most laughable title I've heard of in years. The adaptation has solid writing if you think plopping a 30-episode flashback arc into the show after like the 3rd episode is great for structure. It's almost they figured 99% of the people watching were teenage girls living under CCP's censorship desperate for BL content who already knew the story so why bother trying.

I never said it had anything to do with each other, no need to be so aggressive over your lack of reading comprehension. Idol drama is one point, plot is another. And it's not an idol drama.
At the same time, unlike another novel that got turned into a series, the plagiarism controversy was mainly down to a hate campaign by people who didn't like the author and most of the allegedly plagiarized authors supported her, actually. The plot is fairly solid in comparison to other shows(western included, btw.), even though it did have pacing issues in the show itself, that I agree with.
And if you think the novel title is ridiculous you clearly haven't been around Chinese webnovels a lot because that title is really, really tame and low-key as far as CN webnovel titles go.

You're allowed not to like it, but your hipster hateboner is pretty silly.

While it's really easy to dismiss stuff as being only for teenage girls, the series had 8 billion views for its company and had a major economic impact. That's not just teenage girls.

I am also not a teenage girl, had never heard of the novel prior to watching the show, and I'm not a big consumer of m/m media. Please consider re-examining some of those prejudices and preconceived notions.

Right? This is one of the most successful CN dramas of the recent years with a LOT of watchers from all sorts of groups, trying to pretend it's just desperate teen fujoshi who don't know better is such a dumb take.

Plenty of Western shows go all-in on attractive actors and production values over writing or acting, too, so I fail to see the problem? Like there are whole networks here dedicated to ridiculous dramas.

Cough cough The CW cough cough

But I hear the OP on wanting a drama with a good story, writing, and acting (not just pretty faces -- and I say that as someone who enjoys watching above average good looking to beautiful people "act". Sometimes, I'm more interested in a story than the actors.)

Hah as the nonny who was OP of the earth falling in love with the sky - your comment made me laugh. The Untamed is like the only Asian drama I've ever watched. And shallowly I only watched and loved it for its sheer staggering gayness. XD
I also enjoyed the fact it wasn't American and that it was completely unrelated to RL.

Not sure why people enjoying things has got your grump on. Hope you get over it soon.

+1 that's the spirit!

(Anonymous) 2020-08-31 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
And there's not a damn thing wrong with that! I enjoyed the hell out of The Untamed and yeah, it was my first Cdrama. I've watched more since then, but Asian dramas as a whole are a new genre for me. It's funny that this makes someone grumpy, for some reason.
