Re: If You Could Only Recommend One Book, Which One Would It Be?

Gotta say, the bible is one hell of a storybook.

DA

The social repercussions of every book except the Bible bursting into flames might not be worth saving it though. Imagine all the incredibly shitty people that would feel empowered by that and use it as an excuse to do even shittier things. (I don't mean "Christians in general," I mean extremists here)

Sorry, you lost me at "social repercussions".

K, nvm then. Found your answer interesting as a hypothetical but I guess it's a dead end.

So AYRT had you for "the"?

The other anon.

I guess they just wanted to respond, not discuss their response? Idk I find the idea fascinating as a post-apoc book-burning kind of situation. Only one religious book remains. How does humanity react? Probably not well, as it doesn't react well to things like this

What if it was an audiotape of The Bible read in a condescending voice by a 14-year-old atheist?

Re: If You Could Only Recommend One Book, Which One Would It Be?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-01 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be an even more interesting hypothetic situation imo. Who is this mystery child Bible reader? A prophet? Would people try to find the voice match? Imagine the results!

Would buy The Judges single if they put some oomph into it.

I think the bible is the least worthy of saving.

Out of all the books in history?

how many other books have inspired so many people to be murdered, or enslaved, or exploited?

OK, so you're affirmatively telling me that if someone came to you and gave you a choice between saving the Bible, and saving The Turner Diaries, you would tell them to keep the Turner Diaries?

the bible was used to justify slavery.

The Bible has been used for many things, and has a wide range of possible interpretations. The Bible was used to justify slavery. At the same time, the Bible and Christianity were the single most important driving force in European abolitionism and practically all early British abolitionists were driven by Christian faith.

On the other hands, the Turner Diaries are explicitly written for the sole purpose of propagandizing and encouraging white racist violence.

The Koran. Let's not pretend that Christian ideology is the only religion that has been used as an excuse for these things. You may only be aware of America but outside it is a history and present soaked in the blood of virtually all religions.

I've never read the koran and therefore don't feel qualified to have an opinion about it.

Apparently Mein Kampf has more importance.

Well, at least it isn't a candidate for being saved (no pun intended) either.

far more people have committed evil in the name of god than there are nazis.

Re: If You Could Only Recommend One Book, Which One Would It Be?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-01 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
There's not really a direct causative link between holy books and crimes of religion such that you can lay the crimes of religion directly at the feet of holy books, though. Religions are social institutions, based on interpretations of holy books by human followers in specific social and material circumstances, and religions violence is a social phenomenon arising out of those same causes. I don't really understand the logic of ascribing crimes committed by religious people directly and solely to the religion, and ascribing them to the essential core of that religion, and ignoring any other aspect of religion as a social phenomenon. I don't think it's the right approach.

You're right and you should say it, frankly.

So long as you acknowledge that that's true of all religions.
