Is this supposed to be about Sherlock's daughter or something? (I did NOT recognize Cavill there at all, also, is that the girl from Stranger Things?)

(Anonymous) 2020-09-03 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's about their kid sister.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-03 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
oh god not the "never mentioned in canon younger sibling who's going to turn out to be more badass than the original characters" trope. fuck. staying far away from this.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-03 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, it does kinda look like that, yeah...

It didn't rally scan that way for me - maybe watch the trailer before you condemn it?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
The books are pretty good about this - she's definitely not "more badass". Don't know what they're going to do with the TV version though.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Just curious, why don't you like this trope? Just 'cos it's overdone, or?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well BBC Sherlock did a pretty shitty job with this trope so that's kinda on the forefront of my mind, but I'm still going to give this new thing a chance.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's universally a fucking awful take on any original Canon, and usually comes off as a parasitical attempt to wring more cash out of a story with little respect.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm not personally fond of the "female in same profession HAS to be weaker and dumber or it's not 'realistic'" trope either, so each to their own.

yes, it's MBB from Stranger Things. In that picture she's flanked by Sharlock and Mycroft.

This is based on the first of a series of books by Nancy Springer.

I'm just so done with all those countless Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes adjacent adaptions. Something that's basically a Mary-Sue fic plot doesn't make it any better. Disconnect it from anything Holmes and make it just slightly original and I'm game. But this is just tedious.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Sherlock is in the public domain, so everyone is free to make movies/tv/books about it without having to pay royalties. This makes it super popular.

With that said, I would be interested if they hadn't cast MBB. Ugh.

When I heard about this I was so hoping that the Mom and Enola were going to run this cool girl school or have adventures together. I am still going to watch but I don't have great hopes.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-03 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly no, not unless there's a major departure from the books.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-03 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god no. Not another SH adaptation. Even worse that it's the 'secret sibling' take this time.

Can we just. .. can we just have something new?????

The trailer for this looked delightful. I like the actor playing Enola, and of course...Helena. I'm in, and yay - Netflix. I can watch in the comfort of my own home.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I also thought the trailer looked like great fun. Am considering getting Netflix at long last!

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
The trailer looks interesting enough for me to at least give it a chance before judging it. And MBB is a good actor, so that's promising.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I was pleasantly surprised by Henry Cavill's Sherlock in the trailer. Much less pleased by the fact that they made Mycroft thin. I'll still watch it since it looks very RTMI otherwise, but I'm annoyed.

It seems a little too much like self-insert fic to me.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
It may not be - I haven't actually read any of Nancy Springer's books, but that's the impression that I got from the premise and trailer.

Plus, I just don't think Henry Cavill is a great actor. I haven't watched him in very much, maybe one movie, a part of a scene, and a fair amount of trailers and movie clips, but passable is probably the best that I could say about what I've seen of his acting.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
My first thought was who's the cutie with the mustache???

And then I look closely and realize who it is.

I hope it turns out the way you want it, OP.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'll just be in the corner, since my only real interest in this is Henry Cavill...

I actually only hate this because I despise when a character who should respect intelligence, and already learned this lesson re: children, backslides because of both patriarchy and general condescension towards kids, I don't want to watch that thanks.
