Is this supposed to be about Sherlock's daughter or something? (I did NOT recognize Cavill there at all, also, is that the girl from Stranger Things?)

(Anonymous) 2020-09-03 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's about their kid sister.

oh god not the "never mentioned in canon younger sibling who's going to turn out to be more badass than the original characters" trope. fuck. staying far away from this.

Unfortunately, it does kinda look like that, yeah...

It didn't rally scan that way for me - maybe watch the trailer before you condemn it?

The books are pretty good about this - she's definitely not "more badass". Don't know what they're going to do with the TV version though.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Just curious, why don't you like this trope? Just 'cos it's overdone, or?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well BBC Sherlock did a pretty shitty job with this trope so that's kinda on the forefront of my mind, but I'm still going to give this new thing a chance.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's universally a fucking awful take on any original Canon, and usually comes off as a parasitical attempt to wring more cash out of a story with little respect.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-04 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm not personally fond of the "female in same profession HAS to be weaker and dumber or it's not 'realistic'" trope either, so each to their own.

In a general setting? Sure. But this is a special case where a character that's retroactively added to an existing franchise with an already unrealistically special main character, only to be related to or in a relationship with said character AND even more unrealistically special. That's what makes that new character slip straight into classic Mary-Sue territory. Would be the same with a male character, btw, but that's not the case here.

yes, it's MBB from Stranger Things. In that picture she's flanked by Sharlock and Mycroft.

This is based on the first of a series of books by Nancy Springer.
