worked all day, took a bus, a train, a flight, and another bus to my mom's house. she insisted I talk to her on the phone for the five minute walk from the bus stop to her house and stood in the window looking for me. now i'm finally in bed!

Internally debating over how my need for connection might be interpreted by others. It's like, wow, my self-esteem has been beaten down so low that I apologize to people for daring to talk or message once a week, as if once is way too much. Once used to be nothing at all but now it feels like some great burden I'm asking of others. Also bumming over how me giving a present to someone is now apparently such a big deal. Growing up, everyone gave presents all the time, but as an adult it's so much rarer and the people in my life are always blown away by even the smallest token of appreciation. I love making them happy but it's just super surreal to me how they act - as if it's been an eternity since anyone last gave them anything. IDK, it just bothers me on a primal level.

I went for a run this morning. It's cooled off considerably outside, but the air quality is still shit so I didn't run as long as I would've liked. Getting ready to watch NFL. My husband bought half a salmon and he's baking it for dinner tonight with lemon and dill, and I'm making green beans and Yukon gold mashed potatoes for a side dish.

Had a migraine since yesterday. Left work at 3 because it got so bad I couldn't handle the bright lights anymore. Means I have to take half hour lunches for the rest of the week. I'm now dosed up on pills and have my head covered in ice. Still not feeling great, but a bit better.

Still working from home, and I had several calls from my boss today about various crises I needed to help with, but other than that, I've just been hanging around the house. Read some, watched some TV, played some games, looked at stuff online...pretty much my normal life nowadays.

I need to do some cleaning, and I'm debating baking a cake/brownies (or maybe cookies) later tonight. There are so many things I've wanted to bake since quarantine but haven't really felt like it, so I don't know.

I've had my Ritalin dosage increased and I'm seeing how I feel. At the moment... vaguely anxious, very... buzzy? Lots of energy, not much direction. It's definitely doing something, but whether it's what I want, I'm not sure yet.

I got a push notice from my (very reliable) radio channel that said: "Live coverage! Scientists may have found life on Venus!"

Well, that there exists bacteria outside of Earth is exciting if true. However, it made me think of how the coverage will be the day we receive a message from an intelligent alien lifeform.

How will it go in your country? Will your monarch/president adress the nation?

I'm not holding my breath. I've ridden this ride before and within a few years it's usually either:

1. false signal
2. discovery of inoragnic pathway to creating the same simple chemicals.

Hm. I assume that they'd try to keep it under raps (if it wasn't a publicly available message), just on general principle. It's just hard to trust the government with stuff like that at this point.

If it was a publicly known message, I think it would be just a pure media and social media frenzy, everyone would lose their minds.

You what now? Given the temperatures on the surface of Venus I highly doubt bacteria live there. Not in any form that we'd know anyway. Even tardigrades are unlikely to survive.

What life are they supposed to have found???

They will never tell us.

It is likely the (if sentient as we know it or beyond) life forms will infiltrate and assimilate while collecting information.

If it is discovered by the masses, massive PR control. Business as usual and the aliens will the new "flavor of the week" in the media/become media darlings.

Powers that be will continue to feed us what they want us to think perceive about aliens. Swathes of people will react violently out of fear. Although it all depends on who these newcomers are, and how much control the govt thinks it can have over them.

What Elevates Someone To Friend Status For You?

What does it take for a general acquaintance of yours to be 'upgraded' to a friend? Is there something specific you want or need from them first, does a certain event have to happen before you begin viewing them as more that just some rando, or is merely mingling from time to time enough to do it?

In the same vein, was there ever a time when you just instantly and unexpectedly became friends with someone for whatever reason?

Advice for someone new to writing romance?

I've never written romance before and in trying to do a bit of research, came across this:

and I'm just wondering, do the people here that write romance agree with this? As a reader, it just seems like such lazy, cliche, cookie cutter bullshit to me, especially for something that claims to be "believable" and "convincing" (not to mention all the issues with the whole "one character is missing something and needs the other to be whole" concept), but obviously as a writer, I have no experience so it's making me rethink everything.

Anyway, my scenario:

The two characters are best friends and find themselves having feelings for each other, but they both think the other doesn't feel the same way. One is openly gay, the other is straight as far as anyone knows but is starting to realize he's actually bi. The gay one figures there's no way the "straight" one feels the same way (for obvious reasons), and the bi/"straight" one thinks the gay one just doesn't see him that way, so how do they discover that the other DOES feel the same way and eventually end up together?

I know it's obviously tropey in its own way, but it doesn't at all fit the formula laid out in the post I linked. They already know each other really well, they have similar backgrounds, (somewhat) similar personalities and similar goals, and once they're together, I have no intention of introducing some contrived obstacle so they can break up and then get back together just to create drama. Whether the focus will shift to something else at that point (I've debated having the romance be a subplot of a story about something else, especially since I don't know what I'm doing) or the story ends once they're together and happy, I'm not sure yet. I know happy couples are considered "boring" and all but the soap opera-esque scenario described in that post just doesn't appeal to me at all.

I just don't know how they're supposed to figure out that their feelings are mutual in an at least somewhat realistic way. I've actually been in a somewhat similar situation as a figuring-out-I-was-bi woman with a woman who was out as a lesbian but such a conversation never happened because we worked together (and she ended up marrying a closeted gay guy to make her conservative/religious parents happy so it was irrelevant anyway) so I'm just having a hard time picturing how a conversation like that would happen, other than one just blurting out "hey, I have feelings for you" which seems unlikely for someone to do when they feel fairly sure the other person doesn't feel the same. I've thought of having them both be out, but both liking guys doesn't mean they're automatically interested in each other in that way, and they can still think there's no way the other would like them, and even if they do, what happens if things don't work and it ruins their friendship?, etc. I mean, I know I worry too much, but I'm just imagining what I would do, and...it doesn't go anywhere because I'd be too afraid of things going wrong.

Anyway, does anyone have any advice/thoughts/ideas on how such a situation could play out in a semi-realistic way? Or are there massive changes I need to make to the scenario to make it work? Or should I just give up altogether? Any thoughts anyone has are greatly appreciated!
