I made a fandom friend through work once and yeah it was bad. In my experience all work interactions with them were marred by the knowledge that we both knew each other's taste in fanfic. Crossing the streams never works.

This almost happened to me - I almost got a job to work at a pretty popular comic book chain store when I was 16 years old through a much older friend on LJ. The location of the store was a bit out the way for my traveling budget at the time so I didn't take it, but I do remember also feeling a bit weird about the offer but couldn't figure out why (probably felt wary meeting someone from the internet even though I've known this person through LJ for a while. Looking back they had started to get distant after I had turned down their offer so idk maybe it was a kidnapping scheme after all lol)

Oh no, that sucks. I'm sorry your fandom friend is a shitty coworker.

I'm sorry. Keep in mind, though, that it could have worked out fantastically. I don't think taking a job because it was a fandom friend who gave you an in is really any weirder or potentially riskier than taking one you were connected to by a friend-of-a-friend, old sort-of friend from high school, spouse's co-worker's spouse who you don't really know, neighbor from down the street, etc. Heck, even a decently close offline friend could turn out to be a terrible co-worker (or roommate or traveling companion or romantic partner) because you've never seen that side of them.

I've got half mind to ask you what any open positions entail, I'd y'all are that understaffed...

Despite reading this secret, but we're not fandom friends so...

Ah, I'm sorry it turned out bad for you. I guess we got lucky with our job/people. We got to know each other via fandom, and by now we are six fangirls who work in the same company (some of us in the same department). We go to the movies together, have regular fannish meet-ups once a month, go on vacation together, help each other move, sit each others pets, and now we're learning Mandarin together. Eight years in, and it works out great for all of us.
