"I'm an empath..."

(Anonymous) 2020-09-15 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it just me, or are people seeing this term pop up more frequently? It gave me a start at first because I thought wtf, are people seriously claiming to be half-Betazoid or something?

Going by the context, I think they're trying to say they're an empathetic person, but like... to a special snowflakey degree. I really dislike this approach where people act like ooooooooh you see I'd never be mean or act like a jerk even a little bit because I'M AN EMPATH and I just FEEL TOO MUCH, it's like a CURSE to be THIS SENSITIVE TO OTHER PEOPLES' EMOTIONS AND NEEDS. I just think... fuck oooooooofffffffff.

Guess I'm not an empath.

Yeah, from what I've seen, they mean it as "I am empathetic" but tbh, I'm not a fan of it either. Number one, you have to be careful about labels, because as soon as you slap one on yourself, you have to start living up to it. Number two, some of these people definitely do not live up to the label. Either they're putting on a show and love the attention, or they really do wear themselves out and act like emotional martyrs or something, to the point where they don't have any empathy reserved for those who truly need it. (This is not to knock people who run out of empathy, because we all get exhausted sometimes and lose patience with stuff that registers as small on our radar. It just goes back to living up to labels.)

YES. I don't want to be vicious about it but some of the people I see throwing around this label are people I know personally and... nah. They're not sociopaths, but they're not super special empathetic nurturers, either. They're people who believe that they themselves are deserving of more than the usual amount of empathy for all their problems, though...

I see more people making fun of the thing than the thing itself, which is always weird

I've only recently realised that I am indeed an empath in the non-Betazoid sense, and that's why strangers tell me all their fucking hard-luck stories. I don't want to fucking know, I just don't know how to tell them to shut up because the avalanche of words makes it impossible to think.

I get that, too. Oh, there's plenty of empty seats on the bus? Sad Sack gonna come sit right next to me and start bitching about their shitty job. Or their shitty kid. Or their shitty spouse. Same thing at work, I sit down in the break room and start going thru my phone trying to, you know, take my break, and here comes Debbie Downer to sit right across from me and talk at me about stupid bullshit. I'm in line at the grocery store, same shit, different day. I know that people need to vent and I wish it was different but WHY AM I THE SHMUCK ON WHEELS THAT HAS TO LISTEN TO IT.

ayrt Oh god, this. Angry, exhausted empaths unite! Just because we're empaths, it doesn't mean we're nice!

I have a pretty strong dislike of people who label themselves as empaths. One of my coworkers was a raging dick and used being an empath as an excuse. "Everyone emotions are just so overwhelming all the time, that I have to lash out."

The other self-described empaths I've met tend to be extremely self-absorbed.

I figure it's one of those things where if you feel the need to announce it, you're not it. Frex, "I'm a nice guy!"

Yeah, my dad legit has an excess of empathy (it hurts him to walk past worms on the sidewalk without putting them back in the grass; he owns stuffed animals and won't get rid of them because he hates to think of them feeling unloved or getting separated from each other; he carries around spare change specifically to give to homeless people whenever they ask; he has ZERO tolerance for second-hand embarrassment - etc). But he has definitely never called himself an "empath" nor has he ever used his excessive empathy to justify being an asshole.

Obviously, one person does not a study make. But these self-proclaimed "empaths" sound like they're full of it.

The only people I have heard unironically saying "I'm an empath" ... have actually been very obvious narcissists. It's a pretty good bellweather, actually.
