Tell us what you like about your controversial ship(s)!

(Anonymous) 2020-09-20 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
As the title says. Name the controversial ship and then talk about what’s great about it and why you like it. (You can also not name the ship if you don’t want to, though naming it is more fun imo.)

My OTP I love the tragedy of their romance.

Estinien/Alphinaud from FFXIV. They're completely preoccupied with each other (Alphinaud a little more) and it's kind of delicious. I adored how flustered Alphinaud got around him in HW, and Estinien's "this is for you, boy," in SB was like. Unf.

Like, even now, if you go talk to Alphinaud after the MSQ is caught up as far as you can right now, he's talking about Estinien. Geez. ♥

Estinien is fucking 32 to Alphinaud's 16 he is LITERALLY twice Alphi's age

Wow you caught on to why it's controversial lmao. Good job!

If you think THIS is bad, I can't wait for your pearls to fly right off their string when you get to my Ode To Starker a couple comments down. *grabs popcorn*

You are so right!! Thank you!

I hope that anti isn't bothering you, anon. I don't know anything about this ship (besides that there's an age gap of 16 years apparently), but the way you're talking about it makes me smile.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-21 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not bothered at all! Thank you for your concern, though. It's a great ship, haha, there's a ton of little moments like that. Could cut the tension with a knife.

Everyone and Everything/Chosen Undead, hot digidy dog. Dark Souls has opened a whole new world of imagination and creativity for me and I am totally hooked. Monsterfuck is where the party is aaaaaat, man. All spooky babes get a nice big piece of Chosen Undead's ass - it's a buffet! My god, I even ship Chosen Undead with the cute little Sunlight Maggot item equip.

Re: Tell us what you like about your controversial ship(s)!

(Anonymous) 2020-09-21 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I forgot to elaborate on exactly why I like it, besides, you know, all the monsterfuck: I like the sheer chaos of it. The notion of the Chosen Undead battling their way through a hellish landscape, dying countless times over and over again, slowly but surely becoming as monstrous as the beasts they slay... yeah, son! Social commentary! Philosophy! Parallels to depression and existential dread! Starting from sub status and crawling on your bloody hands and knees up to dom... and getting slapped right back down to sub all over again! Heh heh~ <3

I like your enthusiasm, anon! :)

My OTP is Noctis/Prompto from FFXV, which isn't weird at all (it's one of the juggernaut ships, really), but I really really love Japan's take on pairing the timeskip!Noct with Brotherhood!Prompto. There's such a sweet intrinsic sadness in it; a Noct who carries so much burden and so much sadness (including Prompto's own), and a Prompto that is blissfully unaware of any of it and is just a shining spot of sunlight in Noct's otherwise dark skies. Ahhhhh it's so good!!

But the age gap makes it a no-go on our side of the ocean. Thankfully I'm semi-fluent in Japanese, so I've been able to make some friends that I can talk about it with!

Honestly, what don’t I love about Starker?

I love the complex phychological angst of it. I love that Tony feels like he’s finally doing something right with Peter, finally learning how to be more selfless and giving by mentoring this kid…and then the horrible realization that he wants Peter hits him like a freight train and suddenly this thing that was making him feel like a better person flips like a Go tile and it’s this brutal confirmation of the thing he’s always feared--that he’s rotten, that none of the good he does is enough to make him good.

And I love Peter’s angst, too. The angst of being young and inexperienced and far-too-seriously in love with a person who is 1. deeply inappropriate, 2. a thousand lightyears beyond his reach, and 3. somehow, improbably, actually does care for him in a platonic way, which is more than he ever could’ve hoped for so he really, really, really needs to not fuck it up by being weird about it.

I love the guilt and the angst that cuts right to the core of this ship. And I love that they deeply, genuinely love each other, lust or no lust. There’s an improbable selflessness at the core of it.

I love that Peter’s spider biology means you can be really inventive and filthy with the sex scenes (hair trigger, zero refractory period, super-elastic everything, super strength, etc).

I love that Tony has way more societal power than Peter, but Peter could put his hand through Tony’s chest like an under-baked pie--yet Tony never once fears he’ll be hurt by Peter, only that he’ll hurt Peter.

I love that Tony has way more societal power than Peter, but Peter is the stronger person. Peter fundamentally likes himself; Tony fundamentally does not like himself.

I love that they’re both big damn heroes, and I love that they both view the other as so much better than themselves.

I love the accidental sugar-daddy stuff, and I love the low-key D/s vibes.

I love that the dirtybadwrongness makes it so damn hot.

Substantial age gap, he tried to kill her twice, and she mutilated him both times (though the first one was accidental). They never become more than reluctant allies against the end of the world in canon.

And yet...
She's terrifying and he respects her. He sees how strong she is and he doesn't want to make her less. That's the sort of thing that really gets me where I live.

Re: Tell us what you like about your controversial ship(s)!

I don't want to say (and I personally find it more fun when people don't name ships in things like this, I guess I just like ~mystery~ but maybe I'm alone on that, IDK) because it's RPS and I feel weird about it.

I just like it because they're best friends and super affectionate and frequently talk about how much they love each other and describe their relationship as "intimate" and you pretty much never see guy friends that are that open about their feelings for each other without any dumb "no homo" BS. Like, it can be so over the top that if they were fictional (and more known/popular) there would be a ton of people complaining about queerbaiting (and would be entirely justified). And on the one hand I feel a little bit guilty because I don't want to make it seem like guys can't be that close without it being romantic and play into the whole thing that if dudes are open about their feelings they're obviously gay, but on the other hand, they're like everything I want in a pairing and it's really hard NOT to ship them.

Aw. Honestly, I think people who tinhat in public spaces could use to get a grip, but beyond that, personally I say do you, anon! RPS the shit out of those affectionate bois.

black widow/hulk is so fucking terrible. they're terrible for each other, in all the vulnerable points of their specific traumas. i love that they're never going to work, it's great

I know a lot of the MCU fandom hates this ship because it's not what they wanted (and it was really poorly developed imo), but is it actually controversial in the ~problematic~ sense? I mean, they're two fucked up people. But beyond that, I'd call it nearly tame by fandom standards.

I have nothing against the ship, for the record (other than they should've developed it better).

A Note From The OP

(Anonymous) 2020-09-21 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure who gave the anti's puritanism suppositories today. Hope nobody is too perturbed by their bullshit. Please know that I'm not one of them. Thanks for talking up your ~problematic~ ships with me. I love hearing people talk about their ships. Especially their ~problematic~ ones. I love hearing what people see in them. Keep doing you and loving your faves, guys. Peace.

Re: A Note From The OP

I mean, I mostly pity them. Must be hard to be so far gone as to not being able to tell fiction from reality anymore.

Re: A Note From The OP

(Anonymous) 2020-09-21 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah its kind of sad how far they'll lose it over fictional characters - they're probably the kind of people who just complain but don't bother to create or start discussions that aren't just an excuse to find someone to get mad at.

Re: Tell us what you like about your controversial ship(s)!

(Anonymous) 2020-09-21 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'm honestly having a hard time thinking of anything I ship that's not problematic, even though I tend to prefer slightly less fucked up versions than in canon. If there's not kidnapping and/or power imbalance and age gaps, that leaves like one het ship. My one femslash OTP isn't quite canon because the showrunners were fucking cowards, but it's not fucked up.

Christine/Erik

Lying, using precious childhood memories of her father's fairy tales and taking advantage of her faith and naïveté to really fuck with her head and sell the lies, kidnapping her, and then torturing and threatening his only friend and her boyfriend (and depending on the version, a couple thousand Parisian operagoers) with death if she didn't marry him... And that's nog counting the backstory where he used to be a government sanctioned assassin and torturer who even in retirement kills people for getting a look at his hideously deformed face. Oh and also he's old enough to be her father... why do I ship it?

Because I love AUs that really lean into what Christine tells her boyfriend Raoul when he asks if she'd love Erik if he were handsome.

"Why do you tempt fate, and ask me things that I keep hidden in the back of my mind, like sins?"

And also I love when she lays into Raoul and tells him he has no right to know how or with who she spends her time.

Raoul is sweet and heroic and just not fucked up enough for me to find him that interesting. He'd be a much better partner for Christine irl, but he and his gf and her stalker are all fictional so idc.

I love that Erik was a musical child prodigy and so was Christine and yet Erik ends up lurking in a basement and Christine thinks of herself as mediocre and lands bit parts and trouser roles until they meet.

I love the idea that a lot of Christine's anger at Erik, pre murders and torture, comes from her frustration that if he'd just fucking approached her like a normal person and asked to tutor her, she would've had a hard time not climbing him like a tree. That she felt guilty for lusting after a supposed celestial being and then it's like, good news! He's actually human and desperately in love with you! Bad news, he's ugly as fuck and batshit insane! Good luck!

There's a widely read published fanfic from the early 90s called Phantom by Susan Kay that adds a matching Oedipus complex for Erik to Christine's Electra complex, and turns Christine into kind of a wet blanket compared to the original novel.

I've got to hand it to Kay, though, despite her Draco in Leather Pants Erik, she got some stuff right. Nadir Khan, her version of the Persian, would have me shipping him and Erik if Christine didn't exist... and if I pair up original Leroux Christine with Kay's Erik they absolutely make an awesome couple. On the one hand, Kay's Christine does deserve a nice guy like Raoul, and on the other, I think she and Leroux Erik might actually work, too.

Tbh I tend to fluffify their relationship if I'm writing it by having them meet accidentally before Erik kidnaps Christine or starts lying to her. That still leaves that he's a bitter deformed old extortionist who used to murder people for fun and profit.

Belle/Rumpelstiltskin from Once Upon a Time. The show jumped the shark, de-finned the shark, made the fin into soup, and left the shark slowly bleeding to death, plus I stopped watching in season 3. But hey, it's Beauty and the Beast but more fucked up!

He's cursed and ugly and hates himself and bargains for a nobleman's daughter to come clean his dusty castle and never see her family or friends again!

She's brave and bookish and calls him on his bullshit but is secretly glad to get out of an arranged marriage to Gaston who is a superficial dipshit!

There is a deleted scene that was later confirmed to happen offscreen in canon via an offhand remark that involves hair sniffing and a heaving bodice in front of a mirror!

He turns Gaston into a rose and gives it to her with a flourishing bow and she curtsies and blushes as she takes it from him and then unknowingly cuts Gaston's legs off, and you will not even care, watching it, because you're watching the Beast realizing he loves her and has to let her go!

I just love this ship so much, I'm not even sorry for the exclamation points!

If you were expecting an easy happy ever after, there isn't one, because unlike most Beasts he needs and loves and is addicted to the power he gets from his curse, and unbeknownst to Belle, when she comes back to kiss and save him, he doesn't want saving and throws her out while screaming "no one, no one could ever love me!"

And then she disappears and he thinks she was tortured to death on her father's orders for staying with him and for awhile it gets more fucked up from there. No exclamation point because it's kind of depressing, ngl.

Shoutout to the amazing and amazingly prolific writers in this fandom that created a spectacular amount of fic and smut from 44 minutes of TV and then went on to turn the moldy straw of later seasons into fantastic solid gold fic.

V/Evey. He subjects her to torture and brainwashing and she loves him in spite/because? of it and he dies. He hates himself for it and does it anyway because he loves her and he knows she'll leave him afterwards but she'll fear nothing and isn't that worth it, even if he loses her? He's theatrical and masked and scarred and boy howdy do I have a type or what? Also not a very comfy movie or graphic novel to read or watch these days. I don't ship GN V/Evey because it's a bit too fucked up even for me, tbh.

Honorable mention to Swanfire, also from Once Upon a Time, and my one sort of healthy het ship which nonetheless got me called a pedo more than any of my other fucked up ships with actual age gaps.

For some reason, even though the actors were like a year apart in age, somehow in the flashbacks to when they met, antis assumed Neal was his actor's actual age while in flashbacks but Emma, played by the same actress who played her present day self, was 17 (meant to be 18 but the writers sucked at math among other things) rather than a pair of 18 year olds being played by the actors who played them at 29 a) so the characters would be recognizable and b) because Neal's secret other identity was a massive fucking spoiler the writers were trying to hide.

But even without an age gap there was plenty of fucked up to go around. Neal was terrified of his dad, and anything to do with him. When he found out that staying with Emma would a) keep her from finding the parents she'd been separated from and b) potentially reunite him with his own father, he ran for it and Emma ended up taking the fall and a jail sentence for a theft he'd committed. So Emma went to jail thinking he'd set her up, gave birth to their kid, gave the kid up for adoption, snd spent a decade and change hating Neal while he spent a decade and change hating himself and having no clue he was a dad.

Okay, it's not fucked up except that it didn't happen because Disney forbade it or someone got cold feet but honorable mention to my other OUAT ship, Mulan/Aurora (Philip can join in if he really must) because Mulan was going to confess her love to Aurora and Aurora told her she and Philip were getting married so she didn't and it's been years and I am still angry, dammit.

Shout out to your ships, anon! I can tell how much you love them, and I dig it. :) I don’t know most of these, but I feel you on V/Evey. I also don’t ship the graphic novel version. The whole vibe is just different and yeah, it doesn’t work for me. But I feel like in the movie we’re straight up meant to kind of ship them--in a tragic, messed-up, gonna-end-badly sort of way.

Also the wanky BS about the ages of Swanfire sounds incredibly annoying, and you have my sympathies. Some of these people seriously have no sense of perspective at all.

my otp is a (headcanoned) ~40yo king and a 16yo prince, where the prince is only ~4 years older than the king's own daughter. :P
