I used to be a low-key anti (I.e. didn’t send hate, but I did think a lot of stuff was disgusting and potentially harmful). And no, I never had a rival ship or a hate-on for a particular character. It was literally just that I believed fiction that romanticized abuse and rape was harmful and I didn’t understand how anyone could kink on it.

I am telling you, from the vantage point of someone who used to be kind of an anti and isn’t anymore: a lot of antis honestly just believe the people who are into that stuff are fucked up sickos whose gross kinks are actively contributing to rape culture, the romanticization of domestic abuse, and the normalization of pedophilia.

I often wonder what people like you would make of someone like me. Someone who was sexually abused at a time when there was little to no support for victims and I had to find my own way out of the mental hell I was in. Dark dub and non-con fic helped me work through and process a lot of my emotions. I credit both dark and fluffy fic as the reason I'm alive today.

If there had been people like you telling me that reading this stuff meant I was a fucked up sicko who was contributing to rape culture, it would have had a profoundly negative effect on my mental health when I was already vulnerable and hurting.

In short, as far as I can see it's you and people like you who are hurting people.

"A lot" doesn't mean "everyone". There's nothing wrong with a person induldging in a problematic kink, as long as they understand and ackowledge that the kink has problematic aspects that to majority of people may be triggering and unpleasant. But there is a certain portion of people in fandom, who don't seem to realize that their kinks are inappropriate. There have been cases of twins attenting cons being pestered to kiss each other for a photo by some incest shipper, who seemed completely oblivious to the fact that it's not a normal or approprite thing to ask for. There have been cases of underage celebrities, who were bullied with use of photoshopped images of themselves in sexual situations made by fans and posted all over tumblr and deviantart. Sure, antis sending death threats to fans who are just sitting in their corner not bothering anybody are horrible human beings, but let's not pretend like all shippers with problematic kinks in fandom are well-behaved angels.

And who gets to decide who is ok and who needs to get harassed? Who is the god amongst the antis who knows better than everybody? Who can look into people's heads and see who has bad intentions?

How about people just stop pretending their very ordinary form of bullying is somehow serving a higher purpose and restoring justice?

People need to stop obsessing over what other people ship and concentrate on content they themselves enjoy. But maybe the only joy these people can feel is the sense of false superiority for their wholesome and correct ship choices.

But there's a big difference between someone doing that and people just enjoying the kink itself. One is an act of social obtuseness and is not directly related to the kink itself.

I'd argue that any person nagging others to make out in cosplay because they ship the pairing is the same kind of gross. As are pervy guys in bars who egg on girls/girlfriends/sisters to make out so they can perve over them.

I ship a couple of incest pairings. The kink does not directly lead to that behavior. And screaming in peoples faces that it's problematic in your opinion does fuck all to change that behavior.

I don't know. I doubt anyone has ever come across some tumblr post about a "problematic" ship and went: "Oh well, I was planning on acting like an asshole, but after reading this self important drivel about how nobody should ship X because gross I decided to become a better person."

I have several issues with what you've said here.

Firstly, you say antis sending death threats to people 'sitting in their corner' are wrong. The implication appearing to be that death threats to anyone exhibiting behavior that you have defined as 'not normal' is, in fact, okay.

Secondly, the examples you give of people acting inappropriately are, I completely agree, well out of line. The problem is that fandom has always attracted people who are not socially astute who don't properly get social cues. The incest shipper- do they know how uncomfortable that must be for those people? Probably not. But back in the day someone would have taken them aside and told them to cut it the fuck out. Not brought their existence on to the internet so they could be sent fucking death threats by antis who have decided to be judge and fucking jury.

Underage celebrities and anything to do with kids is a cesspool I don't know how to interpret. Kids is an absolute no go for me. But with underage stuff where it crosses lines there is usual legal recourse. Why are antis not using legitimate routes?

I suspect because the source of anti behavior is plain old bullying cloaked in a moral crusade.

Just like people used to take Hetalia fans aside and tell them that cosplaying the exis powers in front of the Holocaust memorials is not cool? Not sure what days you're referring to, but I've been in fandom for a good 20 years and I've never experienced them.

I don't know, ask Emma Watson and Tom felton why they're complaining about having been sexualized in childhood at women's rights rallies and interviews instead of taking the legal recourse. Possibly because when you're a celebrity and these pictures are all voer the internet, there's little you can do.
