Uh

Not to be rude but did you try searching for *Hagrid* adopts Harry fics?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-04 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I wondered if Hugrid was his name in a different language version of HP?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-24 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Hagrid adopts Harry would be the cutest AU ever

(Anonymous) 2020-10-04 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Is Hagrid's name different in other language versions or something?

My opinion of Hagrid has changed a fair bit since I first read the books. I wanted Harry to live with him rather than the Dursleys back then. I think Hagrid would have been a nicer adoptive parent, but I'm not sure Harry would have survived the experience. He's better suited as the crazy uncle type. He doesn't have a great awareness of how fragile regular young wizards and witches are, probably because he's never been one.

My vote is McGonagall. She's stern, but caring. She's good with kids. I understand she's widowed herself, so she knows about loss and loneliness. She knew his parents and would have been able to tell him about them. I think she would have made sure he had friends his own age before he started school too.

I mean I would read all of these fics. I would read Hagrid adopts Harry fics, I would read Remus adopts Harry fics, I would read Sirius adopts Harry fics, I would read McGonnagal adopts Harry fics. I would probably read a Tonks adopts Harry fic even though I don't even know how the mechanics of that would work out. (I probably wouldn't read a Snape adopts Harry fic but that's only because such a fic would inevitably have a totally different interpretation of Snape than I do)

The basic concept of Harry having a strong stable adult figure who cares for him and bonding with that character is just fantastic stuff and there's more than enough interesting adult characters in the series to do it with

(Anonymous) 2020-10-04 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
wait, she's widowed?? I always thought she was just a badass spinster. huh. TIL.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yep! Its something that came from the Pottermore website as released background information I believe.

Not only did she marry but she married after the end of the First Wizarding War/Voldemort's disappearance in the '80s which always struck me as kind of interesting because it meant she married in her late 40s.

Less impressive was that JK had her widowed after 3 years of marriage because her husband died via Venomous Tentacula bite. It just seemed like a pointless death to me when, considering we only knew what Harry knew, Minerva could have been married the whole time. Most students rarely register their teachers as having lives outside of the classroom after all.

Maybe because his name is Hagrid?

Honestly, I don't think Hagrid is responsible enough to care for a kid. He loves these wild creatures, and that is cool. He's a great friend. But when he teaches classes he has no concept of what kids should and shouldn't be allowed to be near or of providing protection for kids. And he lets Harry near the baby dragon. He's just honestly not really parent material.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-04 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. He's one of those people who in theory want to have all the pets but forget that they're dangerous and require actual care. I can't see him with a kid tbh.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-04 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing is, for Hagrid...adopting a kid would just be like adopting another wild animal he doesn't truly know how to manage.

Neither is Sirius.

Yes, Sirius immediately after James and Lily's death would not be parent material I agree. I don't agree that at the time of the series he wouldn't have been because he'd matured at that point, but I'm happy to agree to disagree.

People rarely write fics about adult characters they don't want to fuck, you know that.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-04 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This comment has genuinely inspired me because it is so true for me. Ah ha. After thinking on it, yeah, I don't know if I've ever written fic about a character I wasn't turned on in some way by. Later this week I'll try writing a fic about a character I feel no attraction to and see how it plays out. Hmm.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-04 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Or characters they want to fuck each other. I'm not personally attracted to the majority of my OTPs. But they're attracted to each other, and that's what counts.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-04 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
There's at least half a dozen out of this filter of thirty: https://archiveofourown.org/works?utf8=%E2%9C%93&commit=Sort+and+Filter&work_search%5Bsort_column%5D=word_count&include_work_search%5Bfreeform_ids%5D%5B%5D=968&work_search%5Bcrossover%5D=F&work_search%5Bquery%5D=summary%3AhAgrid&work_search%5Blanguage_id%5D=&tag_id=Rubeus+Hagrid

No promises they don't suck though.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-04 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks!

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like people really forget just how utterly incompetent Hagrid was.
I'm sure people will mention the dragon, him getting tipsy enough to blabber to Quirrel about Fluffy and how he was utterly shitfaced djring Aragogs funeral with Harry and Slughorn there. The bloke is a mess at best and an alcoholic at worst.

Remember the utter shitshow that he put Harry, Ron and Hermione through with Grawp?

He's not responsible. They were 15 year olds. Responsible adults don't drop the responsibility of looking after a violent and temperamental giant on teenagers.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I'd be able to suspend my disbelief for a Hagrid adopts Harry fic. We have 7 books that don't paint him in the best light when it comes to his priorities.

Arabella Figg on the other hand... I'd love to see Harry get raised by her. He'd probably have beaten Quirrel to death with a tin of cat food xD

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
If its been this many years and you've found zero fic, it's because nobody thinks it's a good idea.

And the people who do, aren't writing it.

I think the reason it's not a popular AU is because JK doesn't exactly make him very responsible?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Thing is, if "JK depicts this person as a responsible adult who acts like one, particularly around Harry" were the deciding criteria, there wouldn't be any "Sirius adopts Harry" or "Snape adopts Harry" fic either.

Let's face it -- practically every adult in Harry's life is an irresponsible mess with terrible coping skills who definitely shouldn't be trusted with raising a child. And yet, Sirius, Hagrid and even Snape would have been better parents than the Dursleys.

Maybe because his accent is horribly written out in the books and that makes him a difficult character to write for more than a few sentences in fic? I've tried and failed because it's so ridiculously overdone, but without it, his voice sounds wrong.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
Most fics I've read deal with him in a passive way to avoid having to write any dialogue for him (unless he's crucial for a plot point which is rare).

It's always 'he'd spent the afternoon at Hagrids hut' instead of writing a scene of it taking place.

I don't know another character in this series that writers do this to. The man is just so incredibly difficult to write.
