Look, cliquishness is annoying and making fun of bad fic is out of style for good reasons these days. I grant both of those points. But you're sneering at their style of fandom as much as they're sneering at anyone else.

And if I had to choose, the kind of fandom that has great meta and analysis and lengthy, well-written, quality fic - that's the kind of fandom that I get the most out of and want to see. I think you can have that stuff, and also have enthusiasm and pure joy for the source material. But if liking that stuff is pretentious, then call me pretentious.

I'm sorry to hear that your guild leader is dying. That's awful. I understand your secret though. There was a lot of that going on in one of the Facebook groups for my fandom and I ended up leaving it because of that. I know it's awful and I felt terrible for that people who had genuine health issues, but there were so many posts talking about that and not enough fandom posts.
