What's the worst or most nonsensical case of OOC-ness you've ever seen in a fic?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Bonus points if it wasn't even sex-related, so there was no clear motivation for it in the story

I recently had to stop reading a fic that was otherwise outstanding because of this. It was a Harry Potter fic, which did this to Harry. In canon, as we know, he is a sassy lil snarker who is not intimidated by anything up to and including voldemort and whose favorite hobby is talking back to/disobeying authority figures. In this fic, he is for some reason written as a quivering, perpetually terrified anxiety machine who's constantly having panic attacks so bad that he actually wets the bed repeatedly. It's definitely not portrayed in light of a sexual thing and the author clearly knows their canon, so I have no f'n idea why they're doing this. Everyone else is in character.

That is bizarre, because Harry's got a whole lotta attitude in the books lol.

Did the author not warn for it, or tag it [characteristic]!Harry?

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
no! they didn't warn for anything! they just sort of gradually increased the anxiety-disordered-ness level of Harry over the course of the story until it was so bad that I couldn't take it anymore and un-bookmarked the fic vowing not to torture myself anymore. Everything else about the fic was AMAZING (it was a crossover with Good Omens where Harry runs away and gets adopted by Crowley and Aziraphale and the crossover stuff was handled really really well.) Now I think about it, I think they were actually trying to make it be that Harry was emotionally disturbed as a result of living with the Dursleys? and that he had basically Vietnam-veteran-levels of PTSD from it? But there was ZERO warning or explanation that that was what they were doing, and it had NOTHING to do with the actual plot. it was just tossed in there like some kind of bizarre side detail.

I noped out of apparently a completely different GO/HP xover where Crowley adopted Harry (and Sirius because of legal shenanigans?)

Out of the blue and with no warning, Sirius started having weird daddy-kink-related sexual tension with Crowley and I was done.

Crowley/Sirius is theoretically a pretty decent thing, why did they have to make it weird??

Most are sex-related where all the dudes are turned into weepy, blushing ukes who have no idea how sex works.

For a non-sexual one, I read a SPN fic where Dean committed suicide by slitting his wrists in the bathtub surrounded by candles and flower petals. Dean just seems like the the kind of guy who would shoot himself in the head if he really wanted to end it all.

I probably shouldn't have laughed but I laughed. Oh wow. That is a visual.

Omg me too I feel wrong, but yeah.

I agree he totally would just end it like that. And in his car, if he had no one to pass the impala on to.

That sounds like the kind of thing Gabriel/Loki would do to trick Sam, except we all know it's a joke because that's not how Dean would do things.

God I feel your first one so hard, it's so fucking prevalent and I hate it with a burning passion. Especially because most of the time it's one of two adult-men getting warped into a weepy child who doesn't know what dicks are and I feel like I'm in the Twilight-Zone because I just don't understand how that's sexy, at all.

Good gods, yes, i hate that weird, uke trope.

Dean in a tub with candles and petals *alive* is bizarre, dead is ridiculous.

i actually feel like it's not bizarre alive, if it was kinky.

Almost every and any instance of a character being written with 'anxiety' which basically seems to mean turning an otherwise competent character into a near-hyperventilating mess when people so much as look at them. It's especially boggling when people do this to characters who kill things for a living, or have leadership jobs, like they'd never be able to actually live their lives with the way people write them.

Oh Jesus. Well, there's definitely a spot there for all the fics that basically go 'the protagonist is betrayed by their friends for some dumbfuck reason'. Special mention to one Reborn fic that had all the protagonist's friends abandon him because he'd killed someone in self-defense - when most of those friends have killed people in canon...

Holy shit. I'm watching Reborn right at this fucking moment and that is mind boggling, lmao. They all have Tsuna's back, no matter what. After all this building him up to be able to handle things, people trying to harden HIM for the future ahead, and then they suddenly clutch pearls when he had to do something accidentally?! WTF!

It actually got popular enough that more than one author in my fandom was doing this thing where a chess-master grown man was written as a weird simultaneously feminized, infantilized, and animalistic incompetent who whimpered a lot and could barely function.

The OOC-ness didn't necessarily show up in sex scenes, but it was definitely some kind of kink. It reminded me a bit of the weepy uke trope but it was a het pairing and the female character was usually more nurturing/mothering than dominant, reassuring the male character that it was okay if he bit her and wanted to have rough sex while he freaked out that he might hurt her and could barely talk.

After awhile I could spot most of those stories even though they weren't really consistently tagged, because the combo went beyond just unsexy to actually squicky to me.

On the nonsensical end, for a while there was a... not really a trend, but maybe a small bandwagon? of authors writing fiction featuring characters who canonically drink or smoke and make it so they're either somehow faking it or just doing it for show and secretly hate it. Like "MCU Tony Stark really just had apple juice in those lowball glasses the whole time" kind of stuff. If an author was really that offended by the smoking and drinking, it would be easier and a lot less ridiculous to just ignore it all together.

+1

This actually bothers me a lot in fic. It would be one thing if they just didn't mention the characters vices, but when they go out of their way to be preachy or completely delusional about it I have to nope out.

Fic where Sauron was the way he was because he was abused by Melkor, and he was the abused servant/boyfriend who just took the abuse and loved his master anyway and followed orders without any of his own initiative and bore no resemblance at all to the canon character.

Two immediately spring to mind.

1: Perpetually optimistic 13 year old girl who is so persistent that she by herself serves as the guard for a (admittedly small and unimportant at the time) castle wearing her father's oversized armor. First fic I ever found for the pairing I liked involving her (the other half also in his early teens, I was looking for adorable fluffy puppy love) had her pining over her best friend and instead of telling him or flirting, she tried to stab herself with a dagger to commit suicide. :P

2: I was absolutely all into this one fic in a different and old/obscure fandom right up until after the porn. I am not buying that the flamboyant career criminal trickster who canonically has been sexually harassing the other guy for years would FINALLY get him in bed... and then afterwards start crying hysterically about how he RAPED him and he's such a terrible person. (Not that he isn't a terrible person, but clearly he never cared before.) And for that matter, even if that somehow happened, the other dude would not comfort him gently, he'd yell at him that he was an idiot. It was so weird because up until that point the fic was great, then suddenly boom, hysterical crying over "forcing" someone to have consensual sex.

A X-Men fic in which Nightcrawler renounced his faith after seeing a random little girl die. Worst mouthpiece choice ever for an antitheist pamphlet IMHO.

I remember coming upon a Yugioh fic once that started out okay and then a little ways in a reformed villain insulted Anzu in front of all her friends, she ran off crying and all the rest of the cast was like ‘way to go, we hate that bitch.’ Because that’s totally what the friendship loving YGO protagonists would do. There was no indication this was going to be a bashing fic and it had nothing to do with the overall plot from the summary but I back buttoned out right there.
