I imagine most characters who live alone to wash dishes by hand the majority of the time, even if they're wealthy enough to own a dishwasher. One person just doesn't produce enough dishes to fill the dishwasher before it gets gross to have dirty dishes sitting in it.

I can sort of see what you mean anon. Just can't get over the line because I was 9/10 when that film was out and I saw him as a cool adopted dad figure back then, and it's stuck.

I watched the original recently and overall didn't find it as good as I remember. It was ok but pretty standard for the films of my childhood. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug? But yes the changed ending bugged me even as a kid.
