103. Wow.

105. There are three dubs of which I prefer over the original voice-overs. Ranma 1/2 English cast. Spirited Away's English cast. And Hunchback of Notre-Dame in Arabic! I'm still trying to convince my husband the latter was better in Arabic.

123 After reading Omerta I totally lost any respect I had for Mario Puzo and his work.

131 I've tried getting into this but read somewhere that Rukia is turned into a damsel in distress. Do not want.

136 Probably because he doesn't treat her as an equal anymore. I still love Mulan anyway.

140 Ew.

147 Whenever I think of her I just remember her cankles. Shallow, so shallow.

155 I pity him and yes he is disgusting. Just like Ikari Shinji.

FMA English cast FTW.

131. Rukia actually kicks quite a lot of ass (including the ass of the main character) even if she does have to be rescued once or twice. Bleach is far from perfect on the feminist front, but it makes up for it by having some truly wonderful female characters. I recommend giving it a try before you dismiss it completely. ^^

Rukia's been kicking ass and taking names. Hardly a damsel in destress. The only time she needed rescuing was during the Soul Society arc if my memory serves me right.

I'm going to disagree with the people who say that Rukia isn't so much of a damsel in distress. While she did have one fight where she got some character growth and to show off her strength, it was immediately followed by her needing to be saved from another enemy by Byakuya.

I would say, however, the problem is less with Rukia or with the characterization of the female characters in general than it is how KT makes use of them. I've had this feeling for a long time now that his stock formula for ratcheting the tension up a notch is to have a girl need to be saved. It's happened to more of them than I can really even count, and it gets a bit old. We're often told that the women are badass, but we almost never see it. It depends on how sensitive you are--obviously, it doesn't bother everyone, but it makes me grind my teeth so often I wonder why I'm still reading it.

Ranma 1/2 had an awesome English dub. I also prefer Cowboy Bebop's English cast (though probably just because I heard it first) and Trigun's English cast (I just felt they fit better than the Japanese voices!). Quite a few dubs are as good as (if quite different from) the original, though, which is great. :D

... oh, and the Angel Sanctuary dub kinda sucks. But is still far better than the original Japanese version, somehow. That is seriously hilarious to me.

I don't think it's so much that he doesn't treat her as an equal anymore as it is that he suddenly has to deal with the fact that someone he viewed as an equal became someone he'd been raised to view as an inferior, and he had to realize that her gender didn't change anything about her as far as worth and equality goes.
