I'm going to disagree with the people who say that Rukia isn't so much of a damsel in distress. While she did have one fight where she got some character growth and to show off her strength, it was immediately followed by her needing to be saved from another enemy by Byakuya.

I would say, however, the problem is less with Rukia or with the characterization of the female characters in general than it is how KT makes use of them. I've had this feeling for a long time now that his stock formula for ratcheting the tension up a notch is to have a girl need to be saved. It's happened to more of them than I can really even count, and it gets a bit old. We're often told that the women are badass, but we almost never see it. It depends on how sensitive you are--obviously, it doesn't bother everyone, but it makes me grind my teeth so often I wonder why I'm still reading it.
