Fair.

*snerk*

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who used to write Rorschach slash, I cut them some slack if the actual character is likely to think of it as sin. ;-)

Who'd you ship him with?

Ehh, sinful can be used just as a descriptive word without any religious intention. Like in the 'there's no reason for this to be so good' sense.
I appreciate it in the religious sense when a character is religious in a way that they would have that sort of dilemma.

MTE. Maybe OP can't see it that way, but a lot of people do. It's a bit like celebrating Christmas or saying, "thank god." Am I actually thanking god? No, not remotely. Am I celebrating the birth of Christ? Not at all. The words have become separated from their origin. Someone might use them in a religious way or they might not. Context is important in determining how such words are being used.

if somebody on Twitter said this, everyone here would regard it as more evidence that all of The Kids are a bunch of puritan sex-hating antis who are ruining fandom

just sayin'

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody hates puritan sex-hating antis more than me, which is why I hate the "sin" meme. It sounds like something those people would unironically say.

Or we're tired of people using the term to imply that shipping m/m is edgy or a guilty pleasure.

Just sayin'

I don't like it applied to any kind of sexual work, not just m/m - we've got enough fucking Christian purity damage, it's just plain not cute or funny.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
The /only/ time I've seen someone use this in the way OP seems to be implying was when the author was genuinely faithful and believed they were sinning by enjoying and writing m/m content.
You can bitch at a religious group all you want, blame the religion for all the harm and devastation it has caused over millennia of murder and indoctrination it's committed- but assuming that every individual is equally at fault, that they couldn't be a victim themselves is exactly the assumptions that lead to more hardships.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
It's been a very long time since I've seen anyone use the phrase 'I'm sinning' in reference to shipping m/m - but then again I might just be in better and queerer fandom circles years since then where no one spouts that nonsense around.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I saw it last week, and it was a surprise indeed!

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's much less prevalent these days but I remember when the phrase 'my sinful gay babies' was everywhere and it always set my teeth on edge. It was just so gross.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
But what if your gay characters are doing trigonometry?

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Or eating cheesecake or chocolate (I’m actually having trouble thinking of other specific foods that get “sinful” appended to them as often...)

(Anonymous) - 2020-11-17 10:36 (UTC) - Expand

I don't know.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I can think of a couple of characters who might plausibly think something like that given their backgrounds. And I can think of some fandoms set in time periods where that kind of thought would not be that unusual.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. It bothers me when people jokingly use “sinful” for any sexual content but especially when it’s applied to gay content. Like, I get that it’s a joke, but it doesn’t land for me.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
eurgh yeah i hate that. as others have said: there are some canons/fic settings that can make the use of 'sin' work because of story context, but most of the time it's people directly conflating sin with dirty and my gay-ass has heard that comparison way too much irl to want to put up with it in fandom too.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
It's a tongue-in-cheek way of mocking the fact that a lot of people, even in fandom nowadays, think all porn is sinful. I've seen it more about her porn. When someone trots out the "straight girls giggling over slash" story about it, they're usually strawmanning because they're the kind of person who hates anyone who isn't mlm enjoying slash for any reason, regardless of whether or not it's literally a straight girl who giggles about sinning.

SA

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry for autocorrect, "her porn" should say "het porn"

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
I was a little surprised to hear this was a thing. So many people across the entire world have to hide their sexuality thanks to religious oppression that it just seems extremely fucking distasteful to ever use the term sin in reference to someone being gay or a gay relationship. Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
That's because it's not really a thing. It's very rare and stopped as soon as people pointed out that using "sin" for "sex" in an ironic way had unfortunate connotations when that sex happened to be gay.

What so fag, fairy and the like can be reclaimed but sinning is where people are drawing the line?

This is dumb as heck.
