I can see this. Jane hasn't had much of a role in the MCU for a while, either. Valkyrie would be so much better, but I'd be down with Sif, too.

Still, they had to go with the "name," probably.

You know - I want her to be Lady Thor considering the circumstances around her previous performance explains why it was so lackluster. I think as long as they didn't try the same tricks and gave an actual good script she could have alot of fun and do it justice.

What were the circumstances?

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ok so alot of this probably can be found better said in other places but what I remember basically boils down to this - Thor comes out in 2011 and Natalie has her first baby the same year. She wants to pull back and take time with her kid so lets everyone know that.

This is important as Marvel tends to have their actors under contracts for the movies so they don't take it well. I know Marvel starts courting her hardcore to be available for Dark World (2013) though.

I remember that she only agrees due to a talk with a friend from the Marvel camp, a peek at the script that shows Jane as a non-damsel, and the director being Patty Jenkins.

She agrees and basically reconfirms her contract with Marvel. End result is a sort of bait-and-switched as it wasn't long after she's been signed on that Patty Jenkins gets fired, the script goes under multiple rewrites, and still there are multiple re-shoots (using body doubles) after production is concluded.

And to finish it all off comes the snubbing of her for Ragnarok (what should have been her third contracted Thor film) and subtle smack talking about her due to her non-appearance for the film (or if she'll cameo in later films).

I don't mean to be unsympathetic but director and script changes are part of how movies are made and someone with Portman's experience knows this. If the choice of Patty Jenkins was so important to her, she should've made it a contingency of her contract. Or, as I said, she should've known that movies change directors like actors change costumes.

Also, it's entirely understandable to be disappointed or upset about all those changes regardless, but a professional tries to do their best work no matter what they think of the project they agreed to do and are being paid crazy amounts of money for. It's not snubbing if you do a crap job and they decide to make do without your character in the next film.

i wasn't the biggest fan of jane's but nothing about natalie's performance felt phoned in to me, even in the dark world (and this is coming from someone who still hasn't forgiven halle berry or january jones for their performances in their x-men movies).

I couldn't stand Natalie Portman as Jane. Honestly I thought most of the human characters were obnoxious, but Jane was especially annoying. IDK about her other films, but I keep confusing her and Olivia Wilde as being the same person, and multiple times I've watched Olivia Wilde in something and gone, "wow, the girl from Thor actually CAN act!".

Only to realize it's an entirely different actress, lmfao.

If we get "female Thor" it needs to be Sif or Valkyrie.

I love Natalie Portman, but. . . let's just say that Jane Foster isn't my favorite character in the Thor films. But I have high hopes that with a better script & better direction, she'll shine, like she usually does.

Guess I'll sit at my lonely table for 1. I thought Natalie Portman did a good job in the first Thor and did what she could with Thor 2. Finding out the drama during production for Thor 2, I am taking it that it took Wonder Woman to become a success for Marvel to admit fault and try to make amends with Portman.

IMO it's a cynical move on Marvel/Disney's part, but I do believe Taika Waititi pitched a good faith story to Portman so I'm not so adverse to seeing Jane Foster pick up the Hammer.

I'll sit six feet away from you at the Jane table. I liked her in the first one. Didn't care for the character in the sequel, but I think that's on the writing/direction, not Natalie.

I'll wave at you from the opposite corner! I like the actor, like the role, liked her performances.

I wasn't aware of the drama, but MCU can frankly suck it, they fucked up a lot of stuff in later movies, and I think her character arc was one of them.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
I’ll join you at the Jane table. I really enjoyed her, and her chemistry with Thor, especially in the first movie.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I’ll sit with you anon, I always liked Jane and have never understood the fandom hostility towards her. She’s nerdy and cute, thats enough for me to like her.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely! I don't think anyone could have done much with the role she had in the second movie, but she was fun and lively and brave in the first one and I totally bought her and Thor having a fun fling (but she would never put him ahead of her research).

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd join that zoom conference.

I liked her a lot in Thor, and she was far from the worst part of Thor 2. I'm unsold on her as Thor, but only because I'd like Sif or Val more with Jane as scientist support.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Portman is one of those actors who do well with a great script and do crap when they treat her as just a pretty face (which happens a lot) so I'm excited to see what she can do as Thor in a way I would never be if she's Thor's love interest.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Natalie as Jane, especially in the first movie. I also think she and Hensworth were fun together. I’m hoping they save Sif for the Loki series and I don’t really care about Valkyrie. I hope she doesn’t get a smaller role in Love and Thunder because I know a lot of people enjoy her, but I’ve never found the actress engaging.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 100% with you, OP. I couldn't stand Natalie Portman in the Thor films and how she phoned in the performance.
Shame it couldn't be Valkyrie or Sif :(

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
I think that 98% of other actressess would have achieve exactly as much as Portman did with such scripts, especially post T1. It just wasn't good material for anyone.
