Bob Oblong has my vote for animated sitcom husband. He might be missing all of his limbs but he's a genuinely good guy.

Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble are much better, but I suppose they are from an era when the sitcom husbands weren't quite so stupid yet.

you don't think Fred is stupid???

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Nowhere near Homer Simpson-level stupid, which is nearly braindead.

Barney's dumb, but at least he's a sweetie.

But Fred spends half his time being a bellowing sexist jackass and the other half failing at stupid get rich quick schemes. No thank you.

This is going to sound really awful and bitter, but...

I can tell you from first hand experience that being married to someone who loves you with all his heart isn't a picnic if his idiocy constantly creates problems for you that you have to solve, if you end up doing 99% of the emotional labor in your marriage, if you're always the responsible adult because your husband isn't, if he means well but somehow always screws up or drops the ball, etc. The anger and resentment builds to toxic levels, even if you love one another very, very much.

Because at the end of the day, the choice isn't between a competent bastard and a loving idiot, it's between a life with a partner who cannot/will not pull their own weight in a relationship and a life where you don't have to carry that extra burden because your "partner" isn't there for you.

Bob Belcher gets my vote

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I both Homer and Bob, but Bob's definitely the better husband.

*I like

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
And a better father.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
With this and Bob Oblong, though - are either really terrible to begin with? (I guess there’s more of an argument with Bob Belcher, considering his stubbornness or obliviousness can cause problems. Also, he may or may not have tried crack last night, but if he did, he liked it.)

(also also, even though he comes around on or is way chiller about a lot of stuff than expected, I do think he shouldn't’ve used Jimmy Pesto’s kink as leverage)

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
They're really not. And even if Bob can cause problems sometimes he's definitely the more level-headed partner in that relationship. I vote for both Bobs being disqualified from the idiot sitcom husband competition for being good husbands who aren't stupider than most of the rest of us are from time to time.

Depends on the season. He got dumber and meaner over time.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
There are lots of heartwarming moments where we can see just how much Homer loves Marge and those moments are lovely, but Homer does create lots of problems for his family and even Marge got fed up enough to leave him at least once (though she went back to him because Homer redeemed himself and status quo is god).

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Does Greg Universe count? Sure he’s a hoarder and could take better care of himself, but I’d be down with a romantic, supportive, laid-back rocker who owns his own business, lives by the beach, and is brave enough to tell an alien overlord to get bent.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
Greg is the best! Sure he's not perfect either but man, he really doesn't go out of his way to cause problems for people most of the time lol

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Hell yeah! Homer & Marge are my OTP to end all OTPs.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
OT but it's really creeping my out that Marge's arm is growing out of her head...

While we didn't get to see him in full action, I'm going to say Flanders would be the best animated husband? I'm trying to think of who else, but I. Feel most animated parents sucked. Like everyone in Rugrats had some shit going on (but they were trying). the dad from King of the Hill showed growth over time, which I think (if you're not perfect to start) is a good indicator for a good relationship (again, people being people and trying learning, growing). I nominate Flanders because he really seemed to live his family and seemed to have all his shit together. Whether you agreed with his values or not is another story, but...I mean next to Homer...or was that the point of Flanders as a character? To be a foil for Homer and the "ideal American nuclear family"?

Anyway, just my 12 cents.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, Flanders and Hank Hill were good animated husbands and fathers. All of the mentioned dads in this thread are goofy and often ridiculous but a lot of them have their hearts in the right place.

Oscar Proud was a decent husband and father - very hyperactive and often got into trouble but still very caring and genuine.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-02 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

I can't believe I forgot Oscar Proud! Yeah, I'd definitely put him up there with Flanders and Hank Hill. He definitely loved his family and tried his best to follow his dreams while supporting his family. I loved the Proud Family as a whole (Suga Momma was the best lol) but there was a lot of love in that family. Definitely up there. Supportive of his wife & daughter.
