(Anonymous) 2020-12-19 12:31 am (UTC)(link)I also think Joss Whedon was, and presumably still is, a real feminist, and that the properties he created were well ahead of their time in their depiction of female characters. Just because he did some shit that didn't live up to his ideals and beliefs does not mean he never legitimately held said ideals and beliefs, nor does it erase all the stuff he did in support of said ideals and beliefs. Doesn't mean anyone has to like him. I'm just not here for the black-and-white, all-or-nothing, revisionist history bullshit that surrounds him.

also, a lot of the problems with Buffy's writing were overall issues, like Buffy's power being inconsistent only when needing to give Xander some use, or in general how Whedon believes women operate in patriarchal systems seen throughout many of his shows. I find the "feminist" stuff more one-offs than the other, but those issues were so rarely seen that he gets a lot of credit for them.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-20 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)You're wrong. Holding ideals and not living up to them is tokenism at best, rank hypocrisy more like in his case. Plus, the writing isn't all that feminist in fact.
