I think it's totally fine that you don't want a beta, and I have no beef with anything in this secret. In fact, the fuck-you pettiness is kind of refreshing to me. That said, personally I think you should just let them assign you a beta, and then just ignore as much of the beta's advice as you want.

Having someone to do SPaG checking is really never a bad thing, even if you ignore every other suggestion they make.

Well...if I volunteer to beta for a big bang or challenge and the writer credits me but doesn't make the changes I suggest, then I look like a crappy beta.

I basically just do spelling and grammar, and ask questions if it's not clear who's doing what, make suggestions if they use epithets or a word that isn't commonly understood in the canon language, too British if it's supposed to be Texans, etc.

However, the people in my fandom tend not to enter these things if they're really bad writers, but someone who asks me to beta better not put my name on something full of errors.

Plus, oh my god...spending time beta-reading their thing and making thoughtful suggestions they ignore because they're too special? Jesus, that's kind of insufferable.

OP would not be asking you to beta for them. The mods would be asking you to beta for OP.

It's not OP's fault that the mods are forcing them to work with a beta. It's not OP's fault that you're assigned to an unwilling author.

Ideally, OP would tell you straight out that they're only working with a beta because they have to, and warn you that they're only really looking for a surface beta. OP might not feel at liberty to say that to you, though, in case you were to complain to the mods and get them booted again.

But if this is how you feel, then eh, maybe OP's approach of shamelessly lying about having a beta is their best bet. *shrugs*

Rule one of being a good beta is that you ask the author what they want a beta for. If all they want is SpAG? Alright, that's all you do. If there's obvious Brit/Yankpicking issues then you bring those up too, but not everyone is open to actual content editing.

Set expectations at the beginning, and it's a lot less frustrating for all parties.
