Eh, it's been a while since I saw this but calling it sexist seems like a reach. What would you change to make it less sexist? Should the woman be ugly or not get together with the guy?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-16 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
MALEVOLENT ANIMALS WHICH MEN HAVE JUSTIFIABLY MURDERED SHOULDN'T THEN TRANSFORM INTO CONVENIENT SEX DISPENSERS

some things you don't really make "less sexist". some things are just too fundamentally based on the unconscious assumption that women aren't people.

"Convenient sex dispenser" man you must have lot of baggage to see a lady through that lens

(Anonymous) 2021-01-16 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"lady"? Got some baggage yourself, matey.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-16 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
It is quite an odd male power/sex fantasy, for sure. And I definitely roll my eyes at it, personally, like, "Sure, John." But I guess for me it would depend on how the story is framed and received. Is it being treated like profound literature? Or like the odd little fantasy that it is? If the former, then yeah, I may find that exasperating. If the latter, who cares?

Boring, I'll give you, but sexist and toxic? I find that hard to see, as the film is so fable-like and allegorical I can't really see the characters as people.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-15 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Curious - what's it an allegory for?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-16 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a matter of interpretation, especially in a film with no dialogue, but an easy case to make is that it's an allegory for man's relationship with nature. Fitting, given that it's Ghibli.

because as we all know, fables are never toxic or sexist???

you didn't have to destroy the brothers' grimm's entire lifes work like that

(Anonymous) 2021-01-16 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Those are fairy tales, not fables.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-16 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
And most fairy tales are the very opposite of sexist considering the time they were collected or written in.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-16 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Fairy tales often teach pretty useful lessons for the times, too.

Not all of them. They made a point of collecting myths and legends as well as out right fairy tales.

This is particularly evident in their earlier works, before they were 'cleaned up' for children to read- which they had never been intended for in the first place.

I loved the turtle parts, they were both funny and dreamlike, so I was extremely disappointed when she turned into a woman. Why couldn't we just have a movie about a guy living with his turtle friend on an island?

there are so many "kill this fucking annoying animal which turns into a rich prince" versions of this folk tale that I can't see a reversal variation as automatically sexist. I think with that context even the "women are annoying animals/pets" implications can't be made unreservedly. I do find all versions very annoying tho, and I truly wonder what the point is? you have to violently train you spouse into humanity? people will be aggressively provoking and until you respond in kind, you can't have a real connection? every partner will annoy the living shit out of you but you have to remember they're actually great? idk. I'm not a fan whatever the respective genders, OP, so I'll agree with you there.

Yeah this. There are so many fairytales with beast princes that get killed to turn back into princes. But a lot of people dont know those, they only know, for example, the Hollywood version of Princess and the Frog where the frog gets kissed to turn back into a prince when the real story has the frog asking for a kiss and the princess yeeting him at the wall in response after which he turn back.
