(Anonymous) 2009-01-13 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)135. Odd. I eat right, exercise, actively participate in activities beyond internet fandom. I don't feel like fandom diminishes any of those activities or like I'm not aware of who I am or not actively living my life because of it. Your fandom life does count... Maybe it just shouldn't be your whole life. But I've never met anyone whose whole life was fandom. I'm not sure those people truly exist.
183. There was a TV commercial for this? Oh my. I remember it as Mighty Big TV as well. I had an account there then. I was an active poster... My first fandom was there. I haven't been back in years because it just isn't what it used to be.

There's obviously a lot more to life than social life; but if you were to judge this by the comments people make about how unhealthy the internet is, you wouldn't think so. "The internet is harmful to your life (read: especially your social life, because it does not fit my narrow conception of what a fulfilling social life should be like)," is often the point of those sorts of comments, you know.
So forgive me for assuming you were making just that sort of comment at the end of your secret and attempting to clarify what you meant if you were not.
Personally, I'm a geeky bisexual transman living in Canada's most conservative area: southern Alberta. The internet saved my sanity - quite literally - in high school and continues to be one of the best parts of my life. I enjoy my own interests exponentially more with people who are just as interested in those things than I would on my own. Through queer communities and fandom, I've met many, many people who share my interests and affirm my basic worth and dignity as a human being.
And THAT'S something I couldn't get NEARLY so easily by, "turning it off and going outside," as we're often advised to do. Going outside has gotten me verbally harassed, physically assaulted and spit on. So while I'm not totally adverse to doing so, I sure as hell am glad as FUCK that I have the option to stay safely inside my HOME without being totally cut off from the world on those days when much of said world is trying to do me soul-deep damage.
I have also, however, been sucked in by a site before that had me hooked to a harmful degree, and it was a huge relief when I fell ill for so long I kicked the habit. If you had an internet addiction, and it was ruining your life, then I'm glad for you that you escaped it and can feel that relief and control over your life again.
But don't project your foibles onto everyone else and think yourself the better for it, as your secret seems to suggest you are. Everybody else isn't you.
