I love that most of the Eleven secrets (not only today, but for the last couple of days) have been generally very positive. Which makes me believe that the reported "outrage" was really only a fabrication. I'm so postively excited about this guy and most of my f-list is at least carefully optimistic... I don't even know any haters.
I wasn't around in the fandom yet when Tennant was announced, but I heard that the "outrage" over him lasted way longer and was much more vocal. Maybe Moffat has actually done something right with this casting :p

Anyway, just wanted to mention that.

I know there was a bit of a "WTF NO" Knee jerk reaction by me and some of my friends, (being skeptical of the new doc is like tradition or something!) but we're pretty much over it and I don't know a single person that I could consider a "hater." So yea, I think people are overstating the "outrage" too.

I'm glad too. I think that guy looks cool as hell and it makes me actually want to watch the show for once. My best friend reacted negatively to seeing him, but then again, he was a huge Tennant fan (that version of the Doctor reeled him in) and I wasn't a big fan of Tennant (too nerdy and spastic, just not my style).

I like Tennant a lot and I'm probably gonna miss him, too... but we all knew he wasn't gonna do this forever and had to be replaced eventually. So really, all those "I'll stop watching now!" people really bug me, because they don't seem to grasp the basic concept of this show *lol*
I'm excited about Matt Smith, simply because I've seen a couple of episodes of Party Animals now (which he starred in) and he was GREAT in that! I like him A LOT from that and I have high hopes for his Doctor =)

I think one criticism that comes from both sides that I can relate to is that whichever actor signs on to do the Doctor should stay on for longer than a year or two. I mean, he's only got so many regenerations (unless the writers decide to sidestep that limitation)!

This is the ONLY serious criticism I've had--I mean, okay, sure I personally like some of the Doctors better than others, but that's not the issue. It's kind of sad that they're switching out so fast, though. :'(

I don't recall much Tennant wank, but the Tate hate when she was announced as companion was EPIC. I keep that in mind everytime I read someone saying how shit Matt Smith will be.

Oh God, yes! I was a bit guilty of that, too.. I wasn't overjoyed, to say the least, with her announcement, simply based on not liking Runaway Bride AT ALL. But I couldn't have been more wrong, considering how much Donna ultimately rocked, obviously! :D
I like that Matt Smith hasn't done all that much yet, not a lot of starring roles at least, so that we don't have as much of an already existing opinion of him before he even shoots his first scene :p It's a fresh start, I like that a lot! :D

Oh God, the months of Donna hate! The sad lack of any TRB/pre-S4 Donna fics, excepting a very few where she was so horribly shallow and bitchy that she was OOC by even the least charitable interpretation of TRB. She was like the fandom's whipping...girl...leading up to S4. I spent those months thinking about how much crow all those fans would be eating when Donna got her chance to be totally amazing, and OMing to myself to stay sane.

After that, 11th Doctor hate/dislike/indifference/cautious optimism can't compare. Since he's the Doctor, SOMEONE will adore him, and since everyone went, "Who the FUCK is Matt Smith?!" no one yet has much reason to hate him.
