I've always liked it for the sheer fun and silliness of getting to dress up in costumes. If there's anything that is generally missing from adulthood, it's most people's ability to just do something quirky and enjoy it in a highly public manner (people take themselves far too seriously)

I've never really cosplayed (dressed up to go see the LOTR movies once I think) but this is exactly why I'd do it if I did, and why I think cosplayers are kind of neat.

I don't cosplay nearly enough. I have my Ravenclaw robes (movie specific, not book).

Some of my friends think it is beyond nerdy to do it though.

Oh, it IS beyond nerdy, but that's what makes it awesome. :D

(If I'd had the resources/time/sewing capability, I'd totally have gone to both HP and LOTR in full gear. Alas, no.)

It's weird to watch people who are also nerdy say it and mean it in a bad way though.
This is how it works. My friends and I will be playing D&D (well, specifically Mutants & Masterminds as of recent) and they'll talk about how weird they think cosplay is or how creepy LARPing is. It baffled me.

I'm surprised I had the resources for my one costume. I bought a lot of it and got it a few pieces at a time. :D

Nerd hierarchy! It is so easy to slip into thinking that way, but also incredibly stupid.
