Writing screenplays is NOT the same as writing a novel either.

Neil Gaiman is not the standard, rather the exception, and even he will tell you it's different writing for a novel and a comic.

And what of Clive Barker, Alan Moore, Mike Mignola, Peter David, Charlie Huston, Mickey Spillane, Greg Rucka, Brad Meltzer, Warren Ellis, Will Shetterly, Christopher Golden, Jamie S. Rich, Thomas E. Sniegoski, Arthur Slade, Gary Phillips, Victor Gischler, Duane Swierczynski, Jeff Mariotte and Gary Whitta? Are they all exceptions as well?

You missed the point about writing screenplays. What I am saying is that a good writer is fluid. He can write a comic book script, a screenplay or a novel if need be.

Compared to the number of comic book artists and novelists? Yes. This is assuming that their writing in both mediums are good.

It doesn't matter if you're good at screenwriting or comic book writing, it doesn't guaranteed that you would be good at writing a novel or vice versa. They are not the same thing and approached in different ways.

They might come to write in comics, but it doesn't mean they'll do a good job. I mean, Wonder Woman was pretty much left in ruins after Allan Heinberg and Jodi Picoult(but is now being written under the wonderful pen of Gail Simone :D). Brad Meltzer's Identity Crisis didn't do much then piss a lot of loyal comic fans off, what with the pointless deaths and twists added just for shock value. Meltzer can't write for comics at all, really. He uses way too much exposition and his JLA was as dull as hell. Duana Swierczynski's Cable hasn't gotten that great of reviews, from what I've seen. Whedon hasn't had that great of reception as far as his comic work goes. Lots of Runaways fans aren't pleased with his changed and not to mention it takes forever for him to get the script in.

"A good writer is fluid," is a lie based on the common misconception that writing is essentially a simple task. A *good* writer is good at what they write, whether that be comic scripts, fantasy novels, or poetry. An *exceptional* writer is fluid.

Those guys are exceptional. As I said a little lower, they're some of the most talented authors in our age. Your average, everyday writer can't do that. Please stop belittling the craft with your assumptions. It's not that simple.

Speaking of Peter David (a hero of mine and fantastic writer all around) he addresses this mindset wonderfully in one of his older blogs: http://peterdavid.malibulist.com/archives/001348.html
