I have a cousin named Jolene. She was born about the time Dolly put the song out so I am sure that is where her parents got the name. She hates the song with a passion. I must send her the new lyrics. She will love it.

Well your cousin might be pleased to know that people have taken this to make covers varying from "We're all terrified" to "you know what, if you try and take my man I'll take your teeth" to "I'm begging of you please don't take my soul"

Jolene always bugged me because the woman singing blamed the other woman entirely even though the man was clearly all in. I've always preferred the response song (Diane by Cam) ever since I heard it.

She's not really blaming her though? She's asking her to have mercy on her, and not take her husband when she clearly can. Some men really are that weak, and the fact that the singer thinks Jolene might be sympathetc to her doesn't really speak badly of the singer.

I've known women who, through no fault or action of their own, have men falling over their feet for them. For the women I've known anyway, it's pretty horrible because most of the time they're not interested in these guys, and it can destroy friendships when inevitably their friends partners make a move on them.

In short, men are pathetic and that's my main takeaway from Jolene.

The great thing about being in a city is that even if strangers heard and registered what you were singing, they wouldn't care, unless they happened to also be fans of eldritch horror based filk, in which case they'd probably just grin to themselves and go on their merry way. City folk are very good at filtering out low-grade strangeness unless it's actively disrupting our day or it's something we're personally attuned to - you kind of have to be if you're living in a high-population area, because most people don't have the mental bandwidth to react to that many people on a daily basis.

+1

As a city person, true. Although when I do catch snippets of conversations, 9/10 times it makes me laugh and think wtf

Best example:

"So I had the car, the girl, and money and I had to get the hell outta Dodge"--

What western/action movie are you living my dude? Best part is there's no context, so this could have been about anything.

For me I usually notice stuff like this but I would never actuslly react to it in any way...
