Yeah I know the feeling. I appreciate Miyazaki's aesthetic much more than I do concepts or scripts.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-21 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I enjoy his movies but if it weren't for that aesthetic, I'm not sure I would, to be honest.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-21 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Make no _sense_? Really? I agree the plots in Howl and Ponyo were the messiest but I still feel refreshed not having to go step by step through the Disney/Pixar story formula with an animated movie.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-21 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I’d say that the movie of Howl’s Moving Castle actually simplifies the plot and removes a bunch of the weirder aspects found in the book.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-22 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Lol because it's true. Diana Wynne Jones's books are something else.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-22 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
After MANY MANY years, last week I decided to read Howl's Moving Castle (not realizing it was originally a book) and suddenly, so much of the plot is making sense. I feel kind of cheated by the movie to a degree -- like in the movie I had no...concept of who Howl was, truly, and in the book, you see more of him, have more interactions with other characters that expand things. See, I never knew about Sophie's origins ANYTHING at all really.

That aside, i do enjoy Miyazaki films. But there are other anime filmmakers out there who make some good stuff too that I still need to check out.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-21 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this dumb generalisation makes OP look either like they've got no attention span, no viewing comprehension or just acting like one of those "teehee anime is so weird and random lol and totally not for me xD" people.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-21 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
We're really going to pretend that anime doesn't have weird plots sometimes? Really?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-21 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but weird plot =/= non-sensical plot imo.

Spirited Away's plot (for example) was WEIRD, but it never ceased to make sense (at least not to me).

(Anonymous) 2021-01-22 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
DA Yeah, the plots aren't nonsensical, but the pacing is different.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-22 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
This. There comes a point in a Miyazaki film where it feels like it just grinds to a halt. In Spirited Away, once the baby is a hamster and they're on the train tracks, that's where I check out.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-22 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
That's... that's the best part. The quiet, the experiential now-ness, the Sen-goes-out-with-her-posse, the sometimes-saving-someone-happens-gently. It's like, the focus of the whole story.

for a very long time I didn't understand why or how the kid immediately knew her parents weren't in that group of pigs near the end. Years later I heard Miyazaki was trying to imply that there's some sort of ESP between kids ad parents.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-22 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, I thought it was because she knew Yubaba would try to trick her in some way.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-22 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
+1
Specially as they added that "anime in general." All anime has nonsensical plots? Really?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-21 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I can understand this. There’s certainly a dreamlike quality to Totoro and a fairytale quality to Spirited Away, so neither really runs on normal logic.

I mean, I love that about those movies, but I can see how it could be off putting.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-21 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to enjoy the weird plots. But fully agree, the aesthetic of the movies is to die for and it's the 90% reason I enjoy them.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-21 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the way ivy looks on houses, but OMG after doing renovations on a house that just had way too much other stuff around it--ivy is just inviting critters to live ON your house, and from there, it's a quick jump to IN your house.

Still, though #cottagecore. It's a dreamy look.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-21 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can't really enjoy these types of houses anymore after seeing the massive damage ivy and other similar plant can do to a roof/the drains/the actual walls if left to grow like this.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-22 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but I have dragonfruit cactus that punched through the eaves of my house and is now eating the roof, and no money for repairs. Also roof rats living in the walls. Do I feel like some kind of suburban forest witch sometimes? Yes. Am I terrified the ceiling may fall in? Also yes.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-22 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I was always appalled by ivy on old houses because of the damage, but then it turns out that if your climate is cold enough to freeze the ivy in winter, it doesn't do structural damage to your house, just surface damage to cling better.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-22 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends strongly on the material the house is built out of.

The only Miyazaki I've rewatched recently is Princess Mononoke, but I watched most of his work as a teenager and at no point had I ever encountered any problems with the plots making sense O_o

(Miyazaki is also not your typical average anime...)

But still, I agree that the settings (and animation in general) can be great. I rewatched Mononoke Hime two years ago in a movie theatre, and the forest alone was breath-taking.

I've been watching anime (and reading manga) for years, and while some anime are definitely weird, I haven't found many whose plots are hard to understand.

I can understand how they might be a bit strange for people who are only used to western media though. There would be aspects of them that Japanese audiences would immediately recognise, which may be a mystery to casual western viewers.
