Ehhhhhh I agree mostly

The fandom is definitely hot garbage without any doubt

yep fandom drove me out of SW too so...good job, fans, I guess. you want people to hate this property you love/hate but can't quit? you did it.

I'm not actively in SW fandom anymore but iirc the parts that focused on the EU (now Legends) novels were pretty cool. I always avoided the parts of fandom that focused on the films, though I liked the OT and the prequels, as it tended to be more dramatic and angry. Thinking about it now, i wonder if that's because the EU novel fandom had hella women in it while the film-focused fandom seemed to be pretty male dominated

Except the EU fans are now the ones being terrible to the sequels and insisting that the EU is the only real post-OT Star Wars, and anyone who disagrees is wrong or stupid.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-06 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
This. It's pretty much what this Twitter and YouTube personally named OG Star Wars is literally doing. She's pretty much saying all of this, plus a lot of Republican/triggered Trumpie rhetoric.

The EU fans have been awful since 2014 when the books were de-canonized.

now? the EU fans were a bunch of whiny elitist shitheads in 2003 before the sequels were even contracted. I never could with them, I had at least a 50/50 chance of good meta and fanworks from the movie side but the EU people were hot garbage from the beginning. Mara Jade stans were the worst.

Agreed. This fandom turned into hot garbage and lots of YouTube reactionaries, male and female, literally hating each and everything to the point that it becomes exhausting. I remember when this fandom only had Special Edition hate vs. Original Trilogy love (pre-Phantom Menace in 1999) or Original Trilogy vs. the Prequels. Then, at the end of the day, we get back to our lives. That was before "The People vs. George Lucas" documentary (albeit, this was during the Lucas Prequel era), Lucas giving Star Wars to Disney, and all the "Last Jedi" trashing and the Fandom Menace that followed. Grifting and all.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-06 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good point. The hate has gotten a lot worse since people have monetized it.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-06 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I live in the teensiest corner of fandom, so my experience is usually pretty good (PT era, focus on Obi-Wan, on tumblr). So except the occasional ship I dislike popping up, my experience is pretty cool.

But the moment I step foot outside that little bubble, yeah... I do not want to get into SW fandom on Twitter or YouTube at all. And my tumblr dash is carefully curated and still has a few tags blacklisted.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-06 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly I'm glad I've never been into Star Wars on a fannish level and just enjoy the movies as is(or not, I don't like them all), because the fandom has always seemed so unpleasant from the outside looking in, even back when the prequels were new like. They're silly space-wizard movies and people get so angry about them, it's wild.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-06 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
This. It's exactly how I feel with the DCEU and MCU movies: they're just silly people with superpowers and it's amazing how people get angry about these movies or pits both DC and Marvel fandoms to the death.

Now if we're talking Doctor Who or Star Trek...I'm not touching those fandoms with a 10-foot pole. That's literally going to a lake filled with ravenous crocodiles.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god I hate the DC vs MCU crap, I like both properties because they both make fun heroes/villains and I'm not about to jump on someone's ass because they like a film/character I don't. Yet there's so much rivalry bullshit between the two, always has been as the comic fandom started it years ago, when I'm sat here enjoying superheroes in general and refusing to be anywhere near those arguments.

Ha, I love Star Trek as a franchise but I'll fully admit I've never been near the fandoms, I can only imagine the insanity though.

I really miss LJ and other sites like it for this exact reason. You can't escape the negativity it seems with Tumblr and other tag based systems. People are always overlapping and it's all either chaos or majority decides. It sucks.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I find it way easier to escape negativity on Tumblr, what with the blocking and the tag filtering and primarily being a service for pretty pictures rather than discussions.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I find the lack of discussion part of the problem though. It might be a bit rose-coloured but I remember being able to find even my niche communities where we could just go off and fan out. Of course I barely participate in fandom nowadays, but I can't help but feel that fan content suffers without the conversation to inspire it I guess.

I don't even want to dip my toe into the fandom anymore. Seriously, Screen Junkies had it right when they did their honest trailer for the Mandalorian Season 1. Of course, if you watch that, you start getting every single Star Wars youtuber who post DAILY about their Mandalorian Season 3 "spoilers" or "theories." Like, what, no thanks. Or trying to explain Star Wars stuff using old EU canon that doesn't apply anymore.

And if you get into Star Wars on Tumblr, it's suddenly a rash of Pedro Pascal everywhere. Look, all I care about is Star Wars, not everything else Pedro Pascal has ever BEEN IN.

Both the prequels and the sequels had good premises. They had decent characters. But it's like with any franchise, the quality varies. Same could be said for the old EU. The OT were very solid B Scifi movies based on the Golden Fortress and the Hero's Journey. They had a SIMPLE story and a limited budget. (I'm all for limited budget movies. Somehow they work better.) Rogue One was the closest to capturing that magic on a big glossy tentpole budget. The Mandalorian is trying and doing okay with it, if they focus on the "Western" bits.

But no way would I say any of this off anon. Because the fandom has gotten really toxic.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
lmao wow, SW fandom literally never changes. back in my day it was Everything Ewan McGregor had ever been in, which I was ok with because Ewan is great but that was also before he did anything mainstream and his most famous movie was Trainspotting.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Bullshit.

Maybe you were in this little fandom bubble before the prequals came out but fandom for the original trilogy has and always will be a dumpster fire. No one held hands and sang songs. People were dicks then and they are just worse now because they have a bigger platform to let their hate breath. Same with Star Trek. I was involved with both since the 80's.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. It was just an all-out fandom war if you prefer Star Wars to Star Trek or vice-versa. That and also if you prefer either the original unaltered trilogy or the 1997 Special Editions or if you prefer Star Wars and Empire and give Return of the Jedi a lot of grief (I honestly liked Return of the Jedi, minus the whole Leia being the other Skywalker and the entire rehashing of Star Wars).

Same with Doctor Who during the classic days and the RTD and Moffat eras pre-Chibnall.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Star Trek was chill where I was concerned.

nayrt

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Same with me. I was mostly into NextGen and DS9 around the 90s, along with Xena and Hercules, which were chill fandoms at the time.

OK, full disclosure, I have little to no interest in the new sequels - I mostly stick to Knights of the Old Republic, the X-Wing Series from the old EU, and a few other random bits and bobs like the Coruscant Nights trilogy. I keep up with the comics and that's about it. So, basically, I'm the kind of person who you'd probably hate XD

That being said, there's a reason why I've always stuck to very specific corners of fandom, especially when it comes to these huge sci-fi fandoms. Because, basically, they're trash. There's always been and always will be infighting, the new stuff is always going to be ruining the franchise, and in 5 years everyone will be looking back and saying that the sequel trilogy wasn't the worst thing on the planet. It sucks, but it's nothing new. I do a LOT of my fandom in small-ish Discord groups because it's just easier to curate my own experience.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I was profoundly disappointed with the sequel trilogy, and the fandom nonsense was turning me into a shitty person, so I quit entirely. It would suck to still like the material and want to enjoy it in peace though, so: my sympathies.
