I'm not actively in SW fandom anymore but iirc the parts that focused on the EU (now Legends) novels were pretty cool. I always avoided the parts of fandom that focused on the films, though I liked the OT and the prequels, as it tended to be more dramatic and angry. Thinking about it now, i wonder if that's because the EU novel fandom had hella women in it while the film-focused fandom seemed to be pretty male dominated

Except the EU fans are now the ones being terrible to the sequels and insisting that the EU is the only real post-OT Star Wars, and anyone who disagrees is wrong or stupid.

This. It's pretty much what this Twitter and YouTube personally named OG Star Wars is literally doing. She's pretty much saying all of this, plus a lot of Republican/triggered Trumpie rhetoric.

The EU fans have been awful since 2014 when the books were de-canonized.

They were never "de-canonized." Lucas always said they weren't canon. Certain fans just ignored that and got burned and are still sulking about it. I love the EU, but it was never canon.

The understanding that fans had under for a long time was basically that there were multiple levels of canon. The understanding at the time - rightly or wrongly - was that EU stuff *was* canon, albeit *secondary* canon. I believe this view was officially promulgated, although I am not sure; but it was definitely the common fan view. George's stuff was *more* canon and it was understood that anything George would say would supercede anything anyone else said.

And that was something that was navigated when it happened at the time of the prequel trilogy, which overwrote a bunch of stuff from the EU. People generally accepted the fact that those things were no longer canon. At the same time, publication of EU books continued after that time, with the same common understanding that these were canon unless and until George wanted to change it. Of course, the expectation at the time was that George had no interest in doing so.

IMO the problems with Star Wars fandom are mostly because (1) a bunch of the changes in the sequel trilogy were really divisive and (2) the fandom is absolutely massive, and incredibly broad, not drawn from any one specific niche, so people disagree on lots of things in general

and Star Wars fandom has gotten worse at approximately the same time as the Internet in general got increasingly divisive and chaotic and shitty and political, so some of this is a general trend not specific to SW fandom, it just happens to be the largest fandom in the world the past 5 years

now? the EU fans were a bunch of whiny elitist shitheads in 2003 before the sequels were even contracted. I never could with them, I had at least a 50/50 chance of good meta and fanworks from the movie side but the EU people were hot garbage from the beginning. Mara Jade stans were the worst.

I love Mara, and I agree. She's a fun character, but she's not the most amazing thing ever created. Though that goes doubly for Thrawn, Darth Bane, and Revan who get brought up every other conversation by the same misogynistic fanboys who hate on Rey for being powerful in the same way male characters they love are.
