It would be exactly that. Ugh.

Honestly? I think views like these are not helpful. "Well, it won't be to MY liking and convincing ME that it isn't pandering." So what? We have to start somewhere. Maybe this will inspire someone to do better, if not for Avengers, then something else. And if someone else CAN do a better job, then great! Personally, I think it really sucks we aren't anywhere near having an all-female action moment/group/movie without most people going "WOW, WHAT A LAME TOKEN ATTEMPT, NEXT." I really hate that we aren't past that in 2021.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I agree. First, sorry OP, but not everything made is going to be to your liking, and the creators don't have to cater to your personal whim. Second, yes, it isn't going to be perfect. But it will be a start and a step in the right direction. It has to start somewhere. Otherwise, we'll stay in the same place forever and never have all-female action movies. And in 2021 that's just wrong.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
/shrug I'll keep my expectations in check but I'll definitely watch it if it happens. But I don't think OP and others like them are wrong if they're not interested just because I am.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-08 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
It's OP's opinion and personal preference for what they do or do not want to watch. Does it have to be "helpful"? Why? Are all your opinions and personal preferences helpful?

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That attitude is what tanked the ghostbusters reboot and honestly? Ghostbusters remake was >>>>>>>>>>>>>> the original. But no, we're not allowed nice things because of shitty bitter people.

Based purely on that, i'm going to give it a chance. My hopes aren't high though, because the attitude you have in your secret is endemic and tends to poison this stuff from within.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
eh the remake ghostbusters wasn't that good - but I do agree that it had an unfair start when people gave it bad ratings before the movie was released.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT As a film it was enjoyable mindless entertainment, not groundbreaking like the originals. However, the originals have aged really poorly because of the attitudes of the time, and watching them is almost unbearable to me. So to me, the remake is now much better and certainly it had potential for sequels if it hadn't been shot down out of malice and spite.

I am convinced Ghostbusters 2016 would have been so much better if Leslie Jones had switched roles with Kristen Wiig or Melissa McCarthy.

Kate McKinnon i̶s̶ was perfect.

IA (contrary to some other people in the thread)

It's not that the concept is inherently bad, it's that I don't trust the MCU to do it well. I would rather rewatch Birds of Prey again any day.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact that they did a big GIRL POWER moment in Endgame and it was really pointless (just like all the other big power moments) makes me think that the MCU would be shitty with an all-female movie, yes.

But a lot of the MCU is terrible with having just one woman per franchise which is bad for femslash, so I would like this movie just for the interactions. (Captain Marvel and Black Panther were great on the multiple women front, so I hope Black Widow gives us more.)

Ocean's 8 was a really fun movie. It was fun b/c it took advantage of the Met Gala event and how society views women in that way. It didn't use stereotypes, it just went "people don't pay attention to women in fancy dresses in jewelry at a big event. Let's use it" and ran with it.

Where as a lot of times, like say the "Expendabelles" leaks, instead of treating the movie as they did the Expendables and "okay we're going in guns blazing" they wanted to make the women sneaky and wear highheels and use sexpionage and it was stereotypical in a very bad way. So, I'm glad they've tabled it for now b/c if you're going to have an all female action move it needs to be more Birds of Prey not... Red Sparrow-esque.

So, if the all female Avengers went in with the idea of treating their female characters as actual warriors like Captain Marvel or the first Wonder Woman, then it would be more successful. The main question is... outside of Pepper Potts, are the female characters too similar in personality? Can they actually play off of each other well? That's what makes a good ensemble type movie.

Now the type of humor in the Ghostbuster reboot was cringe for me. It was infinitely better than the creepy original. But having women rip each other apart a la Bridesmaids has never been my cuppa tea. Fortunately, cringe humor hasn't ever been MCU humor, so maybe we'll be safe-ish.

I'm all for more all-women team movies - but honestly Marvel just overdone that I couldn't care less. Maybe I feel that way because year after year we kept getting a constant stream of movies from the mcu setting, and it feels kind of overwhelmingly underwhelming.
Not to say that movies like Captain Marvel or Black Panther were bad - not at all. But movies that require you to know EVERYTHING that has happened in the last 20 movies is just... not great. It seems inevitable that that would happen in any other future team-up movie, let alone an all girl/woman team (but hey if they can actually write a good story that could stand alone and prove me wrong, then I'm more than welcomed to it).

Not looking to start any specific fights, De gustibus non est disputandum and all that... but I'll be honest, I am loling at some of the WRONG on display in the replies...

Anyway, I agree. It COULD be done well... But I wouldn't trust it. Maybe if Netflix was still doing marvel work, I could be persuaded to give an all-female west coast avengers series a go, or one of the all female "heroes for hire" teams... but I don't trust Disney as far as I could sneeze them.

If they could make an all-female Avengers movie as good as the first season of Jessica Jones, that would be amazing! But they won't, so...

Yeah.

I think it COULD be done... but I don't trust any of the corpos involved.

What's displayed here is opinions. Opinions different than yours. Doesn't make them wrong.

i'll see how wanda gets treated in wandavision (so far really interesting!) and how any women in falcon/winter soldier gets treated, and then maybe I'll see if marvel could possibly do something interesting

(Anonymous) 2021-02-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree. The odds that it would be really pandering, and just not very good, are too high.

It is possible it could be good. I just don't like the odds. And the amount of bullshit we'll have to wade through if it isn't good is just to much to make it worth the risk, to me. If the MCU had done anything to convince me they knew how to make such a movie and make it good, I'd change my tune. But it hasn't.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-08 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
MCU cinema releases are all about the "rawwwwr" moments, so an all female avengers would be more of the samey same same.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-08 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
After a decade of male-led “rawr teamwork” movies with token female characters, I’ll happily be pandered to for an hour and half thanks.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-08 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'b be fine with a superhero movie with all women cast and one male hero plus some male love interests. It's just that I don't like Marvel female heroes. I like Xmen Storm and Rogue. The Wasp is so-so. Jessica Jones could be a fun addition to a movie unsimilar to her sseries.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-08 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, if they make a movie I hope it's not gonna be an expanded version of that Endgame scene, which was super obviously pandering. Like, what reason did this particular group of characters have to fight together in this scene aside from them all having uteruses, Marvel? You think we can't see through that? Team-ups aren't satisfying unless they are earned, and the MCU is *usually* good at that, so I was very disappointed with that moment.

So if it's an all-female cast you want, first pick a (preferably small) group of characters who might have some narrative reason to be together and make some effort to write good team dynamics, THEN we'll talk.
