I always find it odd when people say this because in the cases of canons where the fandom ships are largely fanon there's still always *one ship that dominates the fandom, while a handful of others muddle along. There's no such thing as 'ship equality' in fandom because one ship is always going to end up being the preferred one en masse. So even if you wrote a thing this way, fans are still going to gravitate to one and declare that 'canon' even when you haven't.

*MCU fandom is one of the few I've been in where there's several large ships, but there are other factors impacting that: like one ship being popular in a prior canon for 15 years before the MCU existed, which will push numbers overall up. Because otherwise Steve/Bucky dominates by miles over the others.

What ship fans like best have no bearing on canonicity. They can declare whatever they want to be 'canon', but if it's never confirmed and the discourse keeps going for years and years, that's mission accomplished.
