Objectively speaking, Sailor Moon paved the way to a lot of modern mahou shoujo and was big all over this blue world. However, it had plenty of fillers to keep up with the manga. And Sailor Moon was big because *shock!* they did a good marketing job even in Japan. Lots of products, back in the days. This is how anime worked. It's not so much like that nowadays but most children anime are still about the marketing, the toys, games... Script and objective quality of the work aren't that relevant. Subjectively speaking, to each their own. I don't see how it should be a competition? There's a space, time and place for every series. I think kids moved on because Sailor Moon was over and, well, it's common for anime fans - particularly children! - to move on once their favorite anime is over and new contents are no more. What, should I post every day "nothing new to see here"?

Personally I'm always willing to admit Sailor Moon was my first fandom and yes I had fansites, fandom friends and all that. But I moved on completely. Not ashamed of ever liking it, but it's not in my top 10 anime series and, to be honest, not even my top 50 anymore. Some people love it to this day though. And to each their own. (Utena and Evangelion, on the other hand... I'm still rewatching / waiting for those damn Rebuilds. I recently acquired a Fushigi Yuugi manga collection and am in the process of getting acquainted to it in 2021 lol. And Rayearth deserved much better.)

Agreed on all fronts.

I love most all those series but NGE, Rayearth, Utena and others (Haibane Renmei for example) had more staying power for me. I’m still waiting for the last Rebuild and I feel your pain.

BSSM was formative for a middle school me, and I was only able to see a handful of episodes because we didn’t have cable but I could buy a few fansubs.

When Crystal came out I cringed. The animation was poor and the product placements were blatant - the moon stick was a toy commercial just like PreCure. I just couldn’t take it anymore and haven’t finished R. Even though they said it would stay close to the manga, they also dropped characterization pretty hard so they’re flat as the manga counterparts. It’s a shame because they could have done so much more with it for older fans.

But I think they grew up and for one of the giants of magical girls, they don’t seem to treat it with respect.

YES, agreed entirely. In my dreams I'm appointed the scriptwriter of Sailor Moon Crystal and I do everything differently.
