Perfect Blue has rape in it that seems quite calculated for the titillation of anime fanboys. That alone was enough to put me off it for eternity.

This.
Can’t stand to see people (especially women) have this movie on their recommendations list and totally gloss over giving content warnings for the graphic and disturbingly shot rape scene in it.
Watched it once and that’s all I’ll ever remember it for.

That's because no one is raped? It's an acting gig. One of the actors even apologizes to Mima for it. She's deliberately trying to obliterate any chance of getting type-cast because of her idol past. Honestly, the photo shoot is more disturbing.

I know that, due to the trippy nature of the movie it doesn’t come across well during the actual act which is probably intentional to fuck with your mind some more. Anyway, even simulated non-con needs a trigger warning and it doesn’t hurt to put one sentence after your glowing paragraph praising the film to mention it.

I guess it’s more helpful to disseminate misinformation like the comment you replied to instead.
icecheetah: Cat is Disturbed. (o_o)

Oh. Ergggh... .
Thanks for the warning.

It has a scene where the main character, who is trying to break into acting, is fake-assaulted as part of a scripted scene on set, and she reacts badly, and the other actor is apologetic. The scene was just upsetting to me, so if AYRT knows people who admitted to finding it hot, they probably just needed to be more discerning about the company they kept.

Hm??? It does present rape but it's never sexualized. I pretty sure it even tries to present it as a obvious awful thing.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-17 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe you just never met the kind of guy who really enjoyed her dead eyed look and helplessness in that scene. I, unfortunately, have met several. :(

(Anonymous) 2021-02-17 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because gross dudes find the scene sexually appealing doesn't mean it was intentionally drawn to be titillating to them.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-18 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
That is true. I dunno though. Even when I first watched it something about that scene seemed exploitative. I saw it 17 years ago and it stuck with me so much that it still makes me grit my teeth to think of it.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-18 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Different anon here and I got that vibe too. It’s how detailed and up close it is, almost like we are supposed to be in the scene ourselves. Depending on who you identify with in that scene it could go either way.
That’s why I found it so upsetting because I felt her helplessness :(

(Anonymous) 2021-02-18 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Thirding this because I don't even remember the scene all I remember is closing the movie because I was certain I'd get mentally scarred if I watched to the end.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-18 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
What's that about intention not being magical?

(Anonymous) 2021-02-17 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Nayrt

So we're objecting to the movie, not because it's bad, but simply because although it's fine in itself, bad people like it in a bad way? That seems kind of unreasonable. I mean, apart from anything else, you could use that criterion to object to anything with an Otaku fan base.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-18 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Sigh.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-18 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
What?

Like you don't have to like it, but claiming its as glorifying rape for the enjoyment of fanboies is a pretty big accusation. Warn for it sure, but people are arguing against it being displayed in that way too, so it's not exactly fair to judge a show for a few select fans someone thinks they would be into it. The quality and storyline have extremely little to do with how that.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-17 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Do guys actually brag about that kind of thing?

"I loved seeing the raped woman so helpless and broken"

Yeaaaah sounds like the kind of thing someone sensible would keep to themselves.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-18 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Drunk immature barely twenty anime nerds are not typically sensible.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-18 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
You sound incredibly naive to anime dudebros. They're scum of the earth.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-18 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
DA

But what does that have to do with it being better or worse than Black Swan? Creepy people are into a lot of things, and most of them love to misinterpret scenes like that in the worst way /because/ they're into those things. You're not wrong to be bothered by a rape scene obviously, and you're right to warn against it, but content is often more substantial than reaction in cases like these, idk, imo.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-18 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
your comment so encapsulates internet callout culture that i want to frame it. you can't tell me you did not deliberately word that as you did, knowing full well the actual context of the scene. how perfectly disingenuous
