Description: The 'It doesn't have to be like this [two people holding hands while a third reaches out to them dejectedly, indicating a love triangle], when it can also be like this [three people holding hands, with one person in the middle]'-Meme

Text: I'm polyam, and I dislike how many people use V-shaped polyships just to punt one character to the side, like 'look at me, not breaking up the (other) ship!' and never having them interact with the actual couple of the story.

It's often painfully clear the author can't actually fathom polyamory and has no clue how people work through jealousy or what's attractive about having metamours/what compersion is

It makes me feel lonely and sad in a genre that should make me feel fluffy and happy :( but I don’t want to make people feel bad

I think I generally end up reading mostly poly fics with triangular relationships, but I also find myself wishing for more metamour dynamics.

The one time I had that in my life, it was a lovely and supportive thing, like a wonderfully close friend who was also embedded in my relationship with my partner. And the times when I *didn't* have at least a friendly relationship with my partner's other partner, things didn't go so well.

So yeah, fics where all three of them are together sexually/romantically are great, but would like more well-handled V-shaped polyships too.

I tend to stick to triangular relationships as well. But I only like poly when the dynamics work. It is much harder to make poly relationships work the more people who are involved. Orgies is one thing. But with actual relationships, for me personally, it has to read in-character, which means there has to be something in canon that would make me believe these characters could be happy in a poly relationship. There are authors that can make it work. But the only ones I actively ship are trio ones (Buffy/Angel/Spike, Steve/Bucky/Sam, Steve/Bucky/Peggy, Steve/Bucky/Thor, Rey/Kylo/Hux) and those are the ones I most often read because those are the ones that most often are believable.

That being said, an amazing author can make a lot of things in-character and believable. I've read fics where all the Avengers were in a poly relationship with each other and in that fic it worked because the author took the time and wrote it in a way that it worked. But that is rare.

Yes, you’re definitely right that it relies on the skill of the author. I think I’ve read a few poly Avengers fics like that, where things really worked. But it’s definitely challenging.

I think it requires a more 3-dimensional portrayal of the characters so that different aspects and dynamics (or ways of connecting to people) can be explored in different couplings.

Rey/Kylo/Hux? How does that one work? (Steve/Bucky/Thor made me blink too.)

AU obviously where they are either all good or all evil. But it is the dynamic that speaks to me. The dynamic between the three characters would work. With Rey and Hux as both dominant in different ways (Hux is the harsher absolute control, planning dom to Rey's more gentle, caring dom) to Kylo as their sub but the two of them also playing off each other in interesting ways. I know it is weird, but the dynamic is interesting to me and works, at least in the right AU.

Honestly the reason why I don't read much poly-ship stuff, even when I ship OT3, is because I don't think most writers are any good at it. It's hard to balance three people in a relationship and either the stories end up with the 3rd wheel hanging off to the side while A/B get all the love, or A/B are just props to coddle and lavish love on C who gets all the attention(because they're the writers fave character).

I'd love to be able to find more genuinely equal fic, but given that fandom has a hard time with this for simple 2 people ships it's next to impossible with OT3's.

Well put, re: “ A/B are just props to coddle and lavish love on C”. I think I see a lot of that. I don’t mind it as much, because at least everyone is involved, but still an annoyingly lopsided relationship

+1 - honestly I'm fine with either of those scenarios (focus on the couple or focus on one person) but I wish authors would tag that way rather than tagging poly.

Check other fandoms, or simply stop looking for accurate polyship representation. I assume that ninety% of the people who write it have zero experience with it, hence why it's called fanfiction. (or really rather /should/ be called otherwise according to some)

Of course, anything short of a tri-auto-bi-ography is going to be read or viewed majorly through that of one perspective. If you're missing out, idk, maybe you should look at some old RP's.

As to the "character have two hands" deal, then the trouble still remains as to whom grabs whose hand first.

Unfortunately, fandom is one of the few places where there's much in the way of poly output. Original fic is lacking even more in this regard, and it's super frustrating.
