(Anonymous) 2021-02-21 12:26 am (UTC)(link)Word salad lyrics is the best way I've heard it described. I watch a musician/songwriter on youtube who touched on this and explained that when English speaking songwriters write songs for non-English speaking groups, they are told not to worry about the lyrics and just fill it with random phrases to be replaced later. Except then they just kept them. Learning that made this song make So Much More sense.
And also disappoints me that they really did just grab a manufactured song and didn't have any of the members work on it.

Yeah, there's just very little thought put into the lyrics beyond "fun summer vibes", which is such a contrast with all of BTS's other work. Like, compare that to all of Namjoon's writing, his triple-entendres and intelligent use of English to emphasize or conceal a point. It makes a lot of sense knowing they basically took the song as it was given to them, and didn't really bother to change any of the lyrics.
None of it felt really authentic to them - with the exception of Jungkook doing his best "All-American Boy" impersonation, because he does really identify with that kind of persona. There was no interplay of vocal line specific parts with rapline parts at all, which *infuriates me* because HOW?!?! can you put those three on a track and have them sound virtually indistinguishable from each other? Hobi is a vocal baritenor and raps in tenor, but Namjoon's a light baritone and Yoongi could hit bass notes if he wanted. Never mind that Jimin was stuck on only the chorus and Jin had maybe three lines.
"ON" was superior. Honestly, "Black Swan" was even better, but Western audiences weren't ready for it.
