Re: What did you want to be as a kid?

when I was a kid I honestly wanted to be a park ranger - I wanted to be the nature expert who was in charge of a park and could tell people facts and protect the nature. at the time I didn't know rangers were also technically law enforcement and I'm sure I would not have been able to handle that part, so I might have slid sideways into some other environmental science job.

I will never forgive teenage me for chucking science in favor of art, because art was a dead end and I don't even draw anymore. I could have done good for the environment but noooooo...

Nonny let me offer you some comfort. Science academia is a political minefield full of competing egos and backstabbing. Working in the environmental sector is a soul destroying occupation, where you are a cog in the machine that runs on profit and politics. At best your work can cause mitigation measures to be put in place (usually as half arsed as a company or cash-strapped public body can get away with). At worst you're told to make your work fit the corporate agenda or lose your job and be blacklisted. Generally though, your existence is purely a PR exercise - a green stamp to validate a company or public body in the public eye.

I'm sorry art was a deadend for you anon. I hope my comment makes you feel a bit better.

it does actually. I had a peek behind the curtain of academia my final semester of college when the only prof who ever gave a shit about me and my future suggested I go on to grad school because I was (am?) really good at writing about culture. I didn't, but in the process of investigating schools for their masters programs I realized I didn't want to be part of that at all in any way. fighting for grants, proving yourself, dealing with sexism and ageism and other isms from "experts" and tenured folk, no thanks.

thank you for the extra info. my life may not be a dream job but I'm comfortable, safe, and content, and that's probably for the better.
