(Anonymous) 2021-02-22 01:44 am (UTC)(link)Over the years, however, his characterization has noticeably improved. France has matured into something of a philosopher, Spain shows no hints of his old self, and China has gone from a Japanese stereotype to someone who laughs at the Europeans undergoing their Industrial Revolution because he had the technology for that centuries ago. South Korea couldn't be saved because of the (deserved) international backlash, so we haven't seen him since 2008, but if Himaruya chose to use him these days, chances are he'd be very different.
Himaruya was a Japanese college student with a sophomoric sense of humor making a webcomic he had no idea would become an international sensation. I'm not going to say his jokes weren't distasteful (they were) or claim that they can all be pinned on the Japanese educational system whitewashing their own history (they can't), but the man has clearly learned from his mistakes based on how different his content is today vs. 2010.
