Ahhhh the kodama is so cute! :D I love kodama. (Actually made a kodama cosplay and found a way to make the head turn in that weird way, spent Saturday nights at cons sitting by elevators and creeping drunk/stoned people out on their way back from the rave. :D)

My weekend... I tapped the two maple trees in my front yard a couple days ago and already have 9 gallons of sap collected, 7 of which have been boiled down enough to fit in a 16qt roasting pan. The weather this weekend (and really all of next week) looks really good for sap flow, so this weekend I will probably be frantically emptying jugs into other jugs and trying to find/sanitize more jugs. Making maple syrup is... kind of insane when you're just one person without dedicated facilities.

More imminently, I have edited this fic within an inch of its life for the last two days and still don't know what to title it. Decided to look over Pink Floyd lyrics for inspiration because like 5-6 of the fics I've written in this fandom are Pink Floyd lyrics so there IS a theme there. Still can't find anything more thematically appropriate than the working title, which is not inappropriate, works on the surface, but is not quite right if the reader knows the spoiler and what's going on behind the scenes. So I am lost. Seriously, titling is the worst part of writing fic.

Wow, that is a lot of work without facilities. My neighbor used to make molasses from sugar cane. He had a dedicated machine that was pony powered. I remember classes would sometimes come over to watch it be made.

May I ask what fandom? The use of Pink Floyd lyrics is awesome (love their music). Quite a change from the titling you usually see.

Hmm, can't say I know much about the molasses process, but I am guessing just from my experience with maple syrup that making it from the base sugar cane has got to be similarly rough. Syrup is largely just staying on top of the sap flow and boiling it forever, occasionally skimming... but you need storage, and something with lots of surface area to boil it in. I seriously have given thought to building a sugar shack in my yard to avoid all my windows steaming up for weeks. ;) Having a pony to help would certainly make it more fun, I imagine...

Fandom is Vagrant Story. I used to be slightly self-conscious about my weird recurring habit of Pink Floyd lyrics for this game, but just recently I was reminded that the game's director has a habit of throwing Queen references into his games, and this reminder came in the context of the translation and localization team noting that because of that, they felt okay with throwing some Bauhaus references into their own work on the game because they were listening to a lot of it at the time. So I guess I'm sort of following a tradition for this game if I wind up making a bunch of references to a particular band. :P

(Other fic titling convention in this fandom is "find the name of a room in the game and use that", since every room in the entire game has a unique and usually intriguing name, but nothing there quite fits this one either.)

Ooohhh, maple syrup! So envious! The best I can get is store brand stuff that can't decide whether it's from Canada or Vermont.

Hah! Well if it makes you feel any better, the homemade stuff doesn't necessarily taste a whole lot different than store-bought (as long as it's actually 100% maple syrup and not "pancake syrup" which is usually mostly corn syrup :P). The main difference in my case is, since I don't have all the fancy equipment, usually there's some of the "sugar sand" left at the end instead of getting it all filtered out. Some people apparently find it gross but it's not harmful, so I don't mind a little of it in there. Other difference is that since I control the boil, I tend to boil it to a slightly higher temperature so it's a bit darker, thicker, and stronger, closer to a honey consistency. Makes it easier to spoon out of the jars after it's been canned. ;)

But after even the first time I did this, wow, I see why pure maple syrup is so expensive. The only reason companies can sell it as LOW as they do is because they have the capacity to make it in bulk all at once without constantly babysitting it.
