I feel like that about the art in a lot of the recent cartoons. Steven Universe, She-Ra, etc. But it's just not a style I like, so... *shrug*

Same. Those two in particular stick out to me when I think of new shows that everyone adores and recommends but that I just can't look past how ugly (to me personally) I feel it is.

I think Steven Universe is in line with the CN tradition of shows having intentionally "ugly" style. It doesn't work for everybody but if you've watched other CN shows, it's not like this is the only one that looks like that.

I really love the art style, personally. But I've seen enough criticism of the art in modern cartoons to know OP is not alone in their feelings.

+1

(Anonymous) 2021-03-06 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, OP. It has a very..."someone traced a few characters from their favorite manga and then changed some of the details and characteristics to make it look like different characters" look to it?

Did you mean my DeviantArt OC DO NOT STEAL lol

same. i've been told it is very gay, and i love that lmao. i don't mind the art style. in a way i think it's cute. but i think the lack of shading makes it feel unfinished? or something like that.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-06 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Same, OP.

Looks better in motion imo

Someone told me that too, so I watched 2 episodes. The animation is good, and some of the background work is amazing, but it doesn't change how I feel about how the characters look.

Yeah, I was really not a fan of it either, but it got less annoying as the show went on. Also, Adora's instant crushes on muscular women was so delightful to me that I didn't really care about the flat animation after a while.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-06 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I felt that way too. I did get used to it as I watched, though, so if you still want to be able to enjoy it, maybe put the show on in the background while you do other things, so you're not constantly looking at it? And then if the story grabs you enough, you might be able to transition to actually watching.

I think it's amateurish AND ugly, so I feel you.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-06 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay -- I haven't actually watched the show so sorry if this is a stupid question, but is She-Ra's hair a wig? It looks so fake compared to everyone else's hair, and that's actually kind of impressive given the art style.
