Contrary to what a lot of people think, Rian has real issues writing women. Save *perhaps* Knives out. But usually his women are shallow and really only there to serve the stories about the men. Even if they are the 'main' characters.

Brick.
Brothers Bloom. (Which was one of my faves until I noticed this)
Looper.
TLJ.

Obv he's not the only writer that does this but I always laugh my ass off when people call him a feminist cause he's far from it.

I haven't seen a lot of his works, so it is entirely possibly he does have issues with writing women in other things. But it absolutely was not an issue in TLJ. He did a great job of writing women in TLJ. It was a great movie, the far and away best of the sequels. And part of that was the strong women, not just Rey, but Leia, Holdo, and Rose who were all awesome in their own way.

See I disagree. Rey was a vehicle for Kylo, Rose was a Vehicle for Rose. Holdo was a vehicle for Poe. Leia is fine. I have *real* issues with the way he writes Rey, and prefer her in the JJ 1 and 3. I dont even particularly like TROS, but I like her storylines/plot beats more in those than I do in TLJ by a longshot.

Rose was a vehicle for Finn* (though lord Finn is fucked over in TLJ but thats another story).

Like I am just gonna shut up cause getting into TLJ is not what I want to do again.

I respect people who enjoy/love/appreciate the film. I don't. Which is fine.

to be honest, posting that Rian Johnson is not a feminist because all his female characters are bad and every female character in TLJ is just a vehicle for male characters and then saying that you "don't want to get into TLJ again" seems a trifle absurd

if you don't want to talk about TLJ then posting a bunch of incredibly inflammatory shit about TLJ would appear to be a tactical error at the very least

DA
Just because you don't agree doesn't mean it's wrong.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I do disagree with it

but I also just think it's kind of shitty to say something inflammatory and then be like "I don't want to get into it, I don't wan to talk about it"

You're entirely right. You don't get to engage someone in an argument, say your piece, and then duck out. I mean, you can, but like, people will judge you for being an immature prat. Guess we know why AYRT likes to be anonymous.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
Except that anon gave their reasons for why this was their opinion and then ayrt didn't actually have counterarguments other than "I disagree" and "but why don't you wanna TALK about TLJ" after anon gave them their reasons already so I don't know what you want. It's obvious they both have their own view on this and won't agree on it. Why engage further?

And I really don't see why you, as anon, mock people for being anon. That's... pretty hypocritical.

Well anon said they didn't want get into the movie so I didn't get into the movie

The idea that TLJ's take on Rey is "shallow and really only there to serve the stories about the men" is so totally ridiculous

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. I liked Rey a lot in TFA, and I sincerely appreciate that JJ Abrams actively chooses to write female leads for a lot of his projects, but one thing about his leads is they tend to be written very very straight (in the literary sense not the sexual sense), to the point that imo they can sometimes be a little boring. In my opinion, TLJ took Rey, who was already a good character, and gave her more nuance and depth as a person.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I wonder if it's because in TLJ Rey is on a Heroine's Journey, which is more introspective than a traditional Hero's Journey, that AYRT made such a claim.
